Endgame - Bobby Fischers remarkable rise and fall : by the respected chess author Dr Frank Brady has been recently published.

Has anyone here read this book?

I've read the reviews of his book and by and large the reviews have been positive.

Since reading about his infamous match against Boris Spassky in Robert Greene's 48 Las of Power, I've wanted to find out more about him.

I'll definitely get it. Thanks for the headsup.

There's also a new movie called "Bobby Fischer against the world" released at the Sundance Film festival in Fen 2011.
It's got very good reviews and is a highly recommended documentary.

I bought this biography two weeks ago and finished reading it yesterday.

It is a superb biography in my opinion.
I had read a lot about Fischer over the years but a lot of the detail in this books was very new to me.
The story of Fischer's upbringing and his life after he won the title in 1972 is absolutely fascinating.

    I strongly recommend this book.

    Just after watching it

Very good Documentary and well worth seeing although my old thoughts of Fischer have been thrown into disarray somewhat

I downloaded it from a certain site that people wear eye patches but if anyone wants a copy (Quality not too bad) give me a shout all i ask for is a blank DVD in return.

    Thanks for the review sparks43.

I'm gonna wait to see if this movie hits the cinemas.

.....or maybe they would rather look at it in a legitimate way and not steal it.

If you think it's "very good" then why are you offering to help others in clearly criminal activities? I'm not sure you have a right to comment on the movie since you just pirated it... certainly the creators don't care about your opinion and neither do I.

Didnt expect that kind of a response

The Documentary was aired on tv(Aka Public Domain) It is very unlikely to get a dvd release and to the best of my knowledge Wont be released in Cinemas anytime soon.
Also i was not looking for any payment so the piracy comment was a bit out of order

If it ever gets a dvd release i will buy it and id pay to see it in the cinema the day it ever came out.

I did the same with the Movie "Senna" To get the full version

And btw i went 4 times to see that move in the Cinema and i will buy a Dvd when it comes out

Last time i bother with this Forum now i really cant be bothered now tbh

Being broadcast on television is obviously not "aka public domain". Television companies have to pay big money for the rights to show programmes.

Asking for a blank dvd is asking for something for pirating the movie, which is not on.

The piracy comment is a bit out of order? What? You clearly admitted to pirating the movie, it is just a fact. Your story is you did pirate the movie but it's not a bad thing, not that you didn't pirate anything. You shouldn't have bothered to post to begin with.

Righto this is without a doubt my last post on the Boards Chess forum

I will put this in points so it might be easy for you to understand
    1. I was only trying to help others on this forum
    2. the site is quite obvious but i still do not consider it as pirating
    3. Replacing a dvd does not count as a sale
    4. I am not a criminal in any way and i strongly resent the inflection
    5. Back seat modding is against the rules on this forum and i do not see you are a Mod

    Consider both your posts reported

If i am wrong on my earlier posts fair enough i will recieve a Ban/Infraction From the Mods of the Forum for them

    But just to make sure

Keep your ****ing opinions to your self and do not dare compare me to a criminal

I have no Record in any way but god forbid we ever bump into each other

    YOU PRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Tad sanctimonious.

Sparks is a chess fan and as such wanted to access the film sooner rather than later.
It is unlikely that this movie will go on general release here in Ireland. So I can understand any/all fans wanting to access the movie.

Sparks said he'd buy the DVD anyhow when it came out. I believe him because he's a fan of the sport.
    You should to.

Sparks43, are you joking or what? I was just pointing out that you are pirating material yourself and also offering to do it for someone else. This is fact whether you like it or not.

Don't get emotive and dramatic with me, I was just saying the clear truth. I never said it was "bad" per se to do privately. Now you already said you weren't coming back to this forum...

Locking this thread to stop the messing.
It's up to the mods to decide what they want to do when they're free to deal with it.

    *sigh*

    Right first things first:

The Documentary was aired on tv(Aka Public Domain) It is very unlikely to get a dvd release and to the best of my knowledge Wont be released in Cinemas anytime soon.

    You're an idiot

    http://www.ifibooking.ie/bookingmovieDetails.tpl?showcode=7447

and t.v is not public domain.
Also i was not looking for any payment so the piracy comment was a bit out of order

    You are still an idiot
I downloaded it from a certain site that people wear eye patches but if anyone wants a copy (Quality not too bad) give me a shout all i ask for is a blank DVD in return.

That's piracy cut and dry in legal terms. In fact its worse then simply downloading it because you are facilitating others in pirating. Boards doesnt support this.
I will put this in points so it might be easy for you to understand

I was only trying to help others on this forum

commendable but you are breaking forum rules
the site is quite obvious but i still do not consider it as pirating

yes it is. There is no grey area here. You watched the creative work of a number of filmmakers without paying them for their services. THATS PIRACY. As someone who works in the very same industry I am personnally offended that you do not have the intelligence to even know when you are stealing from me or my co-workers
Replacing a dvd does not count as a sale

Ughh *brainsplode* You are not replacing a DVD. You copying copyrighted material on to a new media and handing it out free to other people without paying the owners of the copyright first. COPYRIGHT -RIGHT TO COPY!
I am not a criminal in any way and i strongly resent the inflection

Yes you are a criminal regardless of how much you resent the inflection
Back seat modding is against the rules on this forum and i do not see you are a Mod

I see no backseat modding here, someone disapproved of your actions and entered an argument with you over it. I could punish him for going off topic, but at no point did he dictate that you *cannot* do anything. He dissaproved and argued the issue with you. That's what normally happens on a forum, cant handle it then I recommend talking to yourself in the mirror.

    Finally
Keep your ****ing opinions to your self and do not dare compare me to a criminal

I have no Record in any way but god forbid we ever bump into each other

    YOU PRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are really f*cking stupid. Personal abuse and a veiled threat.

Seriously, someone may say you are a good chap, but i'll be blunt this thread makes you like an idiot of the highest order. And one that takes a permanent ban.

Boards does not condone piracy or threat on another user at any level. The piracy would have gotten you a months ban, but threatening another user is automatically a permanent ban regardless of any situation or severity of the threat, couple it with personal abuse and a level of stupidity I have never encountered before on the Law this ban is very much warrented.

Superinfinity please take a slap on the wrist for taking a thread offtopic. You can administer it yourself. My slap people across the interweb switch is broken.

I apoligise for not responding sooner, technically I am meant to be retired mod, but the other mod of this forum does not seem to be here either. So I am stepping up momentarily.

This thread may now reopen. But the discussion of piracy and this post and anything not related to the original topic will recieve a week's ban.

    Good Night.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For me it is simply one of the very best written and researched biographical works I have ever read. The author, Frank Brady, does an exceptional job describing and dissecting the deeply complex and troubled, chess genius that was Bobby Fischer. He meticulously explores and analyses almost every important aspect of his life; from his humble origins in Brooklyn, New York in the 1940s, his rise to the “greatest chess player of all time” and his death in Iceland in 2008.

    Get this book people.

Scanning the forum and came across this post. Thanks for the heads up, I must get this.

I can remember Bobby Fischer from the 70's (vaguely, shouldn't have given away my age there!!!). Someone once said of Bobby Fischer that "he wasn't a chess genius, he was a genius who happened to play chess." But yeah, he played it better than anyone else ever did.

Sorry for starting the prevoius sentence with a conjunction, by the way.

    :pac:

Some fresh surprising joy from this thread. I know while I was modding there was to be no more talk on the piracy issue but I'd like to highlight that on the uk dvd edition of this film there is a short film directed by a close friend of mine who I work with regularly. So the brazen act of piracy above actually hit closer to home then even I thought it would.

I know this is going to earn me a ban, but I can't resist, so here goes.

Is this the pirate DVD that sparks was offering?
