I need to replace my 1.3 ford ka. I was originally going to buy a 1.4/1.6 ford focus. But recently I have my eye on toyota celicas. I just need to know wat the running costs of a 2001 1.8L 140bhp celica. What does it cost to tax it and what are the fuel costs for 100miles a week roughly? Can anyone help?

Motor tax rates are based on cc and are on motortax.ie :)
I wouldn't recommend these as lots of them burn lots of oil and it's difficult to spot pre purchase :)

like most car problems- 1st gen mazda 6 diesel for example- the celicas oil burning problem is blown out of proportion. it usually effects the 190bhps and does occur but not as often as to put you off buying one. keep an eye on it every second week like most cars

    and the tax is 550

sorry to disagree but it doesn't really effect the 190bhp at all, they will burn a tiny drop through the VVTi mechanism like many variable valve timing equipped cars. The 140bhp version actually have a 2nd issue that results in quite a bit of oil being consumed in many cases, a litre every 300 miles not being out of the way for one of them. On the 140s it's the piston rings in the issue. The 190s lose a tiny drop as I've said through the VVTi mechanism, if they use any at all ;)

from looking on toyota forums it always seems to be the 190 with more frequent oil problems?

This was only in the very early Japanese models, it was an issue I think with the oil pump shattering under speed and causing problems, this was resolved in all those that were officially sold in Europe, some very early imports from Japan may suffer from this.

Not wanting to be smart but you'd want to trawl the forums a bit more ;):D
The 140bhp yokes had an awful problem up until 2002/2003 ish. Awful as in awful awful. You'd have your work cut out to find a well maintained (as in just serviced when it should be and not ragged from cold) 190bhp that will need 0.5L over 3000 miles :)

the 00-02 ones had an issue with burning oil but once the car was well looked after won't be too much of a problem.
I have a 00 190 and dont have the issue. general mainteance costs on them are good, parts aren't too expensive and easily available. Some models have superstrut suspension which can be expensive to replace so for a daily driver try avoid this. Watch out for road noise on them if your doing a lot of motorway driving, can be bad and very annoying.
Petrol costs are good for the type of car, getting around 26mpg with mixed driving. In the process of changing though, my weekly mileage has doubled and with price of petrol its too much :(
