Seriously a list:rolleyes: LOL Youtube is just as good as books but try amazon for training books. I trained my springer by watching youtube vids and so far has done the job.

A WHP might suit you but not for first dog, springers are much easier trained. I'm in Mayo and I'd say our terrain is much the same and if so I'd go for a springer first off. GSP's arent naturally equipped to cope with the kind of cover you will be doing for woodcock and can be hard trained if you dont know what your doing. My GSP is used mainly for grouse, pheasant and woodcock, the springer is mainly for woodcock and duck. The springer is a great all rounder the only thing I wouldnt bring him after would be grouse. Get this set of dvds if your going to train a springer and watch it afew times you shouldnt need much more than this to train a springer: http://www.paulfrenchvideo.com/epages/BT2728.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT2728/Products/BUCF1234

If you're going to let it in the house as a pet/gundog then a GSP is your only man.
But if it's going to live in a kennel then a Springer is much easier trained and better suited to almost all Irish terrain. Also I think a Springer gives more exciting shooting as it works right in front of you and birds rise as a surprise.
(I say all of the above as a pointer owner, but I've shot over many springers and also have a pointer x springer).

I'd rather a pointer for sheer joy to watch but my springer is a fun little dog & you'd shoot as much over him.
Pointer has buckets of personality & needs a lot of attention when not hunting. The springer Is his own man when not hunting but all for commands when I the field. Funny really.
I always say for an all rounder a springer can't be beat but with time & effort a pointer is as good in many ways. I shoot fair few woodcock & duck with mine as well as pheasants.
Go with what you like the look of & but as much effort in as possible for the 1st few seasons. Then it becomes easy...
