    Hi there,
I've just started running in the last 3 months with an athletic club. I'm entering my first race (but i'm not racing!) in a few weeks time but just found out I've something conflicting that weekend. The run is at noon on Sunday and I've to go to something from the Friday-Sunday (involving two nights out I'd say!) and then drive the 3hrs back the morning of the run. I'm certainly not worried about times etc. and it's a very short run (just 4 miles :o my goal is just to not walk any of it!) but I'm a bit worried if I hate the experience I'll throw in the towel so to speak ha ha
Do you think being a bit tired from driving and nights out (but I can not drink on the Sat so won't be too hungover to drive/run lol) will be counteracted by "race adrenalin" ?! :)

You will never run as well if you've been drinking the night before, not to mention for two nights before. You should get through the 4 miles alright having said that.

If you're not drinking the night before the race, and hydrate well, you'll be fine. As OI said, you won't perform as well as you would have you stayed off the juice for two days and got a good night's sleep, but you should be fine. It'll give you a good starting point for a time to beat in the future. Go for it!

Can I be a bit of a Devil's Advocate here ? Are you serious ?

I won't even do a race if i'm working late the night before ( by late i mean 3 or 4 am ) as i won't be doing myself justice and paying to run a race that i'm not 100% ready for.

As KC said you probably would do better if u stay off the juice for both nights but at least you will have 24hrs dry before the race.

My best half came in Longford last year after working till 3AM 4 hours sleep and 2 hour drive to race. If you have prepared properly the reduce sleep should not have that big an effect on your race. A lot on runners don't get a good nights kip the night before a race (nerves whatever) as long as you get a good nights sleep 2 nights prior and hydrate/eat properly the day before you should be fine.

    *Cringe* Why do you ask?

Thanks for the [other :p ] replies - sure I'll give it a go :D
As I said, I won't drink on the Saturday night and am not much of a drinker anyway. I guess I'll know on the day if I'm too tired :o Drive of shame home lol!

A sneaky pint can be good to relax the night before a race.

Had a pint at a friends birthday, got an awesome nights sleep and demolished the race the next day.

I would say a good nights sleep 3 nights and 2 nights before the race is more important than the night before.
The nights sleep before the race can sometimes not be the best due to nerves etc so its important to be well rested.
