Does anyone have recommendations for suppliers of high quality woodworking tools in Ireland such as Clifton, Lie-Nielsen, Veritas etc etc? It would save having to send to the UK for everything like that! :)

I've been buying the quality tools online for years now; Richard Goughs on Little Mary Street are good for hand tools (and he does stock quality Japanese stuff and turning tools) but most suppliers here wouldn't know what a Clifton or Veritas was!

Saw the thread title, thought "Goughs", but jack of all got there before me. :)

There is/was a supplier in Kilcock, Gleesons, I think. I tried ringing but never got a reply.

Not sure if you're still looking But you can try this link woodworking tools

I wouldnt buy anything off that handy hardware site. Everything is overpriced by at least 20% some as far as 50%.

Il give you an example. I bought a new dewalt mitre saw-718xps with dewalt stand off Paragon power tools in tallaght for 950.

For the same off handy hardware its 1700:eek::eek::eek:. Thats a crazy markup.

Handyhardware.ie are a rip off. DONT buy anything off them.

For me I too use Goughs(great hand tools), Then paragon for power tools. Anything else I need I source individually.

It pays to shop around. I also use ebay for a lot of stuff. But machinery Its not worth it for delivery charges.

Also if you are buying big stuff, the north is where you wanna go. Not newry but right up the top. The savings are great if your gonna spend a grand or so.

What tools are you looking for, anything in particular? If you have a list, I may know a few places depending on what you want.

+ 1 for Gough's. On the rare occasions that I have a few bob to spare - my treat to myself is a trip from the boonies to Gough's. It's how shops used to be in Dublin :(

+1 on that; I drag my eldest daughter along with me and now she even enjoys going in to see what new tools daddy is going to buy!:D

Apologies for the necro bump but does anyone have an updated list on bricks and mortar shops that have a good selection of hand tools? Looking for a good selection of hand planes and back saws in particular. Lie Nielson / Veritas etc.

Haven't been to the carpentry store but I find the two German specialist stores www.dieterschmidt.de and www.dictumtools.de to be first class. Prices are in euro and service is good.

Thanks for the links Recipio, the Dieter Schmidt website is excellent. Spent the last hour or more going though it, great selection of tools but also a vast wealth of information available. I've found what I was looking and then some!

Have you ordered from them yourself? Shipping for under €10 is very reasonable but they're a bit vague on delivery time frames, 3 - 20 days! ? I've bought a lot of computer components from Germany and it's usually delivered within about 5 days of the payment clearing. I wonder would this be a realistic time frame?

Haven't had a look at Dictum Tools yet, will have a route around there later!

Yes, I bought some Japanese Hatagane clamps from Dieterschmidt. They were the only source I could find this side of the Atlantic. As far as I can remember delivery was about one week.

The Carpentry Store in Naas carry the Veritas and Lie Nielsen range of hand tools. I spent half a day there when Deneb Puchalski demonstrated the Lie Nielsen handplanes

Was it mainly sharpening he demonstrated or did he plane some difficult wood also, I like the look of the Lie Nielsen low angle jointer

Yea I was having a look on their website the other day but everything Lie Nielson related listed as out of stock. Don't think I'd saw Veritas there at all. Also they don't have any saws online, did they have them in store?

A company I'm working for at the minute through college, Abcon, based in Cavan manufacture abrasives but also distribute tools and consumables. Maybe try them or ask if they can put you on to a local supplier?
