I was on facebook and someone invited me to one oof those causes. This was to save coillte from being sold to international investors, therefor "saving" irish jobs.

Im sure that if private companies were to buy and manage the forests they would'nt just fire everyone and run off and burn down the forests and get on a plane laughing hysterically at the evil they have just committed.

If the forests are sold, with the regulations on planting (cut 1 plant 2 etc) that a privately owned business would aspire to grow - creating jobs and turning the forests profitable for Ireland.

I dont know the ins and outs of it so im just wondering why this is so frowned upon.

Fionnula raised it in the Dail. Told us all our state assets are safe. So don't worry OP. You won't find out till after it's sold
BTW OP Google ''carbon trading'' for yourself.

What would stop them from cutting all the trees down and make the whole place into a huge landfill?

I suppose the ones that aren't near you might end up fenced and gated.

You do realise that Coillte is one of (if not) the biggest land owners in the state. As far as I remember it owns something 7% of the entire country.

So you think it is a good idea to sell almost one tenth of our country to one individual/company??

Maybe its only after 6pm or general work times, but I know they do lock it up in the evenings.

I have heard of it before but was just wondering what the fuss was about - I never really thought about it or asked any questions so thats what I posted it here for. Didnt realise coillte owned so much land either.

What do you think the chinese would do with it???

They expressed interest. Considering their government's attitude towards animal and human rights it would be a safe bet that whatever their interest it wont be for the good of the forest!

I suppose it really is time the Chinese got out of that pokey little country of theres and moved to a nice gub one about 7% the size of Ireland. The bloody evil geniuses.

Mayvbe their plan is to cut down all the forests and use the wood to fuel their country for 8 seconds.

I think it is the rights to manage/log the forests that is being discussed. Selling the forests themselves would be carzy, although I wouldn't put it past FF if they were still in power.

    Dear ardinn

Dont you know if forests are cut down then the drug criminals of Ireland would have nowhere to stash the thousands of bodies they kill a year.

And thats just the drug criminals. never mind the normal criminals, the rapists, murderers and the unlucky guys who's dates had a heart attack in the woods before sex:( The woods provide a service. Next time you take a hooker out remember that!!!

The law only says you need to plant two trees for every tree you cut down. Says nothing about pouring petrol/cement over the seeds you have just planted to replace the fallen trees.

that moron B Ahern has expressed an interest in purchasing some from the state, so it cant be good

Coillte's assets are to be sold, not the land. Coillte 'own' 7% of the land in the State.
