Avoid a 1.4 Golf. In this scenario the i30 would be te better buy. About 40% more power, better spec, warranty, lower mileage and 2.5k cheaper. If you're prepared to go to 13k for the Golf search out a newer or diesel i30 which is better again.

It's pretty much a badge thing, tbh.

If hyundai could charge what VW do, spec for spec, they would- but they can't so they don't.

Even though its got 27 more horsepower, the i30 is only just over a second quicker to 60, and lets face it, 1.4 anythings are not bought for speed anyway.

I would go for the golf personally, but preferably something like

Both are totally undesirable secondhand - people only want diesels, and given the complete and utter lack of power not to mention the higher road tax (compared to the diesels) from these weedy poverty spec petrols, that is not surprising.

The 1.4 Golf in addition to being dangerously slow is notoriously unreliable as the miles pile on - piston slap is not uncommon after 160k km, and they can eat gearboxes for breakfast as well.

Try and get a diesel - not only will they be usefully quicker, but they will be far more desirable secondhand as well - particularly the Golf as 09 onwards diesel models are €104 to tax.
