I owned one back in 2000. The gear boxes are a weak point and many had problems. If you're buying one now, it's most likely been sorted. Build quality was ok, better than previous Alfas, but not as good are current range.

Other than that, the usual stuff applies like service history and checking for crash damange, etc.

I'd suggest someone that spells it Alpha really doesn't know enough about the cars to own one.

Id suggest that if you have the time to not only spot that but to comment on it tells me you need to get a life mate

ALFA'S need regular servicing and maintenance to live a long and happy life. People who know Alfa's know this and have great ownership experiences.

People who don't know enough about the cars that they can't even spell the name right, tend not to know how to look after the cars, and have poor ownership experiences.

And by the way, apart from being far too busy at work, with new cars coming at me left, right and centre, I have a very nice life thanks.

The 156 is an excellent car with great dynamics. However, they do need to have been well maintained

If its a TS you are going for:
    - check for evidence of regular oil changes
    - check timing belt changes (every 36k miles)
    - check variator was done (or listen for diesel sound/rattle when starting warming up)
    - check that temp guage gets to mid way
    - check that accelaration is smooth, crisp and progressive with no dead spots (otherwise MAF might be faulty)
    - check when wishbones were last done (other check for squeky front suspension )
    - airbag lights should be off - but make sure they selftest works

Finally check that it says Alfa and not Alpha on the front ...:D

Their nice looking cars those 156's. I had two of them. If you buy one put a new camshaft position sensor in it for peace of mind. They have this habbit of blowing and stranding you in Tesco car parks. Everything else has been mentioned above. They are love or hate cars really. Flimbsy build quality here and there. 1.8 is very nippy, Dash looks really cool, make sure engine management light checks on and off as I've seen loads of 156's with their engine lights pulled out of them to hide problems.
