There was a thread on bargain alerts a few months ago and a lot of people bought these

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Digital-USB-DVB-T-HDTV-TV-Tuner-Recorder-Receiver-9714-/180646240726?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item2a0f5ae1d6

cheap as chips but it works.

I have one, bought about then, and yes it works fine, no problems.

I did hack it a bit though as I considered it was overheating, so I opened it and put a small heatsink (piece cut from an old one I had) on to the tuner chip, and now it runns cool as well.
I do not know if this overheating is usual ... but it certainly happened with my one.

Are you using the supplied aerial? If so, it's not surprising you are not receiving any channels.

Depending on where you are, rabbits ears might work, or you might need a proper aerial.

I'm using the supplied aerial (with an extension) . but then i can see the transmitter.

    Wasnt working for me either!

Went outside and stuck the aerial (its a magnet) on a big metal pole and it pull in the channels! ;)

I had one of these delivered on Friday. Works perfectly straight out of the jiffy bag. I think it cost €5.50 delivered. Took about 10 days from order.

    Which Chipset do they use

    They vary somewhat.

From what I have read most are Afatech 9013/5/6 but the tuner chips are not all the same.
Manufacturers frigging about using the same device ID but with different tuners is a great annoyance!

The tuner in the device I received is
    TDA18218HK

    But others are
    mt2060
    RTL2823

Almost all device are recognised as 9015 ...... but 9016 and 9013 may also be mentioned.

    Mine reports:
    Bus 001 Device 015: ID 15a4:9016

    regards.

bought one and it lasted 5 minutes, best to crack open the case, they seem to overheat quite a bit.

Long time lurker on this board, first post. I have a question but first let me thank the resident experts on this board from whom I've learned a lot!

I got one of these. As I expected, the supplied aerial is not sufficient in my location but, by holding together the aerial base to the end of a coax connected to my outdoor aerial, I was able to tune in channels and get good reception. This is awkward, and impractical for more than a few seconds, but at least I know that I only need to connect it properly to get reception.

The aerial connection on the dongle is a sort of mini-coax input. Does anybody with this dongle know the proper name for this connection so that I could look for an adaptor?

    MCX (mini coaxial)

There's one on that list for nearly €70!!! Don't pay that:)

That's great, thanks! I ordered one for less than €2. I think I'll also follow stanley1's advice to crack open the dongle case once the adaptor arrives: my dongle got quite warm in the few minutes that I had it attached during my test.

But it looks like it might be gold-plated :D:D

I'd want a gold plated envelope as well, at that price:)

I thought it was a typo or something when I saw it first, but the listing says "more than 10 available, 88 sold", that's over €6,000!!! Maybe it's the Russ Andrews syndrome...

    ROFLMAO

Although I found it lowered the total harmonic distortion on my whistling electric kettle by 10% ;)

The boffins agree that this is probably due to the fact that the plug "...is fitted with a Russ Andrews 13A fuse. ".

No - I think it's because I'm using the Reference model

...ok enough already - certainly hijacked this thread:D

Got mine as well for the hefty sum of e5.77 delivered. Nice little bit of kit which worked pretty much out of the box. As you say it does get warm, about 38 to 40 degrees so I'm toying with the idea of drilling a few holes in the top as it already has vents on the bottom.

I opened the case of mine and the tuner chip was hot enough to burn my finger - considerably hotter than 40C - .... which decided me :D

For this price it can carry the bubonic plague, but I'll still take it because of HD Champions league games :D But seriously, you might want to put a real heatsink on these puppies or at the very least pump them up with thermal grease. Either way for a 4.50€ we can hardly expect rock-solid build quality as long as its just PnP ;)
PS.Quite useful to have 1 or 2 of these + some Noname DVB-S' to reuse some old kit, ain't it?
edit: Just for the record silicone should be a good choice of thermal paste - Non-conductive,cheap and available in every hardware shop ;)

As it's Freeview HD (Sorry,I forgot FHD was DVB-T2)-capable and with the appropriate software(I'd actually recommend the Win Media Center instead of any bundled software package)... Yeah,it should work perfectly with Saorview, but for the price of this puppy you can get 2 DVB-T's (noname) + a DVB-S and turn your computer in a real HTPC (antenna for the S was not included I think, but you can get a cheapo one with a single LNB for ~20€)
