Are you supposed to keep bank statements?

I've only had a credit card for a couple of years and use online banking but out of habit kept all the bank statements I've been posted. I'm doing a clear out now of random stuff I just keep rather than actually read and can't see a need for keeping these - or is there one?!

On a more serious note, tell your bank to do this statement nonsense online and just ignore it. Nobody needs this paper noise.

Go paperless as stated. You can order statements going back as far as six years. It costs you to do so. Any further back requires a legal need for them.
