code reader

Nearly every code reader will read the standard set of OBDII Codes. I have a cheapo 60 quid thing I keep in the car for general diagnostics for friends cars.

The difference between it, and the more expensive units is that the higher spec ones are usually tailored to manufacturers hidden codes which a normal reader won't be able to interrogate. I have the BMW GT1, and will hopefully soon be getting the Mercedes Star Diagnostic system, the GT1 will pull back more information than the cheap code reader I will have, and will also suggest causes for the fault.

TL;DR : If all you want is basic diagnostics, any cheap code reader is a good investment.

PaintDoctor, did you buy the SDS?
I'm looking for someone with SDS to make a general diagnostics of a W211 and possibly make one small tweak (enabling tank capacity in cluster)
