Just want to know if it's usual (or compliant with regulations) that the shower drain and the toilet drainpipe are connected? I had thought it was separate lines for 'grey' water and sewage?

It depends at what point but not they end up in the same pipe however generally the shower is plumbed higher than the toilet so if the toilet blocks it wont back up into the shower.
