Real life. Just look at those big books of rules about everything, and all those moderators in the navy uniforms and the other ones in the powdered wigs.

I see a bright future for this thread
In all fairness though, while boards.ie IS utterly and ridiculously over-moderated, to a certain point you can't blame them. A lot of it is fear of getting sued, just look what happened when people posted their personal opinions of Oxegen a few years back - and on a forum with a "we are not responsible for our users' behavior" clause.

Ergo, it's insanely annoying, but the paranoia is to a certain extent justified.

    Oxygen is shit.

I'm not saying that has anything to do with M*D.

    I'm not even implying it.

Try breathing without it if it's so shit.

Seriously though, Oxegen is diabolical. It's like taking every suburban park on a Friday night, full of rimless glasses wearing tosspots, and sending them all to one big field. In fact it's like a twát concentration camp.

ah it wasn't always. The place was brilliant - took your life in your hands going in there, it was so sharp. Seriously gone down hill now

Unbelievably, yes. They sued on grounds of libel.

This doesn't justify ALL boards.ie over-moderating but it does justify some. In the same way I imagine legal action is the reason they ban medical questions but as usual it goes too far (asking whether paracetamol is good for a surface wound is not prescription medical advice FFS)... Better than risking the court case though, if say some idiot asked if it was ok to take x and turned out to be allergic to it...

So someone, or certain people slagged off Oxygen years ago (calling it **** or whatever) and the company behind it sued boards.ie ???

that ... is ... mental. Even as you say with the paracetamol thing.
Seriously what type of world do we live in? .. and the scary thing is its going to get worse. I dont think its over-reacting to think that in ten years or so we wont be able to say things like "oh jedward are both clearly so gay" without that being censored/modded  (obviously not them, but who ever)

And im not saying the mods would be dickheads for doing so. It would be the times we live in. That you cant say boo or anything bad about anyone

When you're being sued for libel and could potentially lose thousands, being rude to your accusers is possibly not the smartest course of action.

I only bring up that case to point out that while I agree boards is ridiculous over moderated, it's not entirely the fault of boards.ie itself. Blame it on the legal culture we live in where lawsuits can be brought over the most ridiculous incidents.

I would have thought a message such as "Boards.ie provides an open forum for the sharing of discussions and in no way accepts liability for, or endorses, the content that its members freely choose to post on it" would be sufficient. Evidently MCD didn't think so and evidently the legal system didn't think so either, when you consider that the ban on any and all MCD discussion and discussion of related events on Boards wasn't lifted until almost three years later... How such a case could possibly drag on for that long is beyond me, I asked my dad who studied law in college and he launched into a tirade about liability laws in general (he used to be a journalist so I'm sure he had his fair share of frustration with that kind of thing in RTE)

To give you an analogy here, don't blame the Gards for upholding the law, blame the idiots who made the law in the first place. In the same way, don't blame Boards for their moderation policy, blame the legal system which insanely makes it so easy for Boards (and other such websites) to be liable for the discussion that takes place on them.

I'm fairly sure I read of one website where a user said "go kill yourself", the person subsequently did commit suicide and the website itself, rather than the poster, were sued by the family. For negligence or something like that.

    It's utterly effing insane.

    Parenting

If you disagree with someone you get a warning, if you say you were merely disagreeing you get banned.

I cant figure out that place at all...

Ok, sorry but discussion of moderation doesn't belong in AH. If someone has a real issue with moderation in another forum, or AH for that matter, then there is a procedure for handling this.
Or check threads in Sys/Feedback that aim to discuss how boards in general, and forums in particular, is run.

Mr Wet Blanket will now close this thread, sorry folks.
