    Hi

looking for some tips on what to wear. Ive never wore a dress well since i was a little girl.

Basically id love to wear one and have two weddings coming up also so need to get into a dress and face my fear. Im hoping you all could throw some advise my way on what shape, colour to go for.

im a size 12 on top (although big breasts) slim waste, size 14 on bottom half, bigish bum and then there is my legs, these momas are driving me mad. they are big, i have usual probs, boots wont fit, wellies for oxygen are a nightmare etc.

I dont really know what normal size legs would be, but friends say there not big enough to keep hidden.

I think i could possible wear black tights with a dress but i havent a clue what shape to go for, or get a skirt and top or wear a dress or colours, and then shoes to match aaaahhhhhhhh help me.

Feel so boring on a sat night wearing jeans all the time and then with wedding coming up i need and want to look glam aswel

Hope this is right place for this thread, and hope all you fashionable pple can help little me, oh im only 5 ft 2 aswel if that helps

thanks, and any help or advise you can give me i would apreciate it as i need to face my fear once and for all. Major step for me.

You sound like you have the exact same figure as my friend, and she actually always wears dresses/skirt, never jeans.

She wears 50's style dresses, flared from the waist and ending just below her knee. She almost always wears black or opaque tights and fabulous high heels.

In winter she lives in a fitted knit jumper, pleated skirts to just above her knee or shorter and tights and flat boots, she always wears skirts and tights because they make her legs appear much slimmer than jeans ever would.

But yeah, for a summer wedding I would either say a floaty casual-ish maxi dress (as in not evening gowny) or a 50's style dress with a big skirt that ended just below the knee would be perfect, a bit of fake tan will make legs look slimmer too, the paler and whiter they are they bigger they look, and some nice heels to elongate your legs and you'll be set :)

thank you so much spadina, i defo looking at the 50s style, not mad about maxi dresses, i usualy like tightish type styles, but im going to have a look at this option.

Scared of going bare legged in summer, but i need to get into wearing them so i dont look so uncomfortable when im out. do you think this would be nice

Yeah, something like that would be lovely, with a nice belt around you waist to cinch it in and make you look fab. Dresses with a bit of volume in the skirt are really fab too. My friend who has the similar figure will normally on a night out wear a flared dress with a belt or a fitted knee length dress, then beautiful heeled shoes and she always looks fab. She shoes a bit of cleavage, highlights her little waist and that's what the focus from others looking at you will be on.

I'm not dissimilar and I pretty much always wear skirts and dresses out and about. Knee-length skirts and dresses (particularly 50's style) are your greatest asset here, along with moderate heels.

Trust me, as long as your leg has shape (i.e. no cankle) it will look fine, regardless of actual size.

    HI there,

I feel your pain... I am 5'1'' and always having problems buying clothes..

One thing I've done recently is get some opaque grey tights and then got some grey high heels... You could do that with any coloured dress. I think if you have the tights either the same colour as the shoes or the dress, it will make you look taller...

I liked the grey tights and have plum ones too. I think the mad patterned or bright coloured ones are definately for those fortunate to have height on their side.

Another thing I've done and its worked out a treat, is to go to House of Fraser in Dundrum and use the personal shopping service. It's completely free. You just call up, tell them your budget and what you are looking and when you arrive, you will have your own big dressing room. The shopper knows what brands are likely to fit you best , so saves you the time of having to try on loads of stuff, only to be depressed coz they don't fit.

You are not obliged to buy, but I swear I loved almost everything that she brought into me... hassle free. And they have brands like topshop and oasis, so the gear is not expensive. If you are not in Dublin, there is probably a similar service near you...

    Happy shopping..

Oh and here are the grey tights I was telling you about

Yeah the 50s style dresses are so flattering. Calves and ankles are probably the guaranteed skinny part of us all, so show them off!

Whatever you do don't wear tulip style skirts or skirts that go straight down, always go for something with a flare or a kick or A-line.

Waits belts are also your friends, as are opaque tights (try and stay away from patterned tights, they often look like cellulite and add mass to a leg

If you are going bare legged I would suggest investing in a bottle of Sally Hansens airbrush legs to give a nice colour (white legs with red spots aren't a good look on anyone, regardless of size) try a medium or deep glow (i find the light glow doesnt even show up)

Dress wise, if its synched under the boobs it accentuates all the best bits, but none of the worst, like the dress below

i would suggest that style too. ones that flare out at the waist and go just past the knee, if it's for a wedding. they're really flattering on almost every body type. retro in georges st arcade in dublin are a great bet. hope that helps.

np. few sites i know of are:
    http://www.vivienofholloway.com/
    http://www.whatkatiedid.com/
    http://www.getgoretro.com/
    http://www.pinupgirlclothing.com/

some of them make the clothes look almost costumey, but in real life with a bit of accessorising you can downplay that if that's what you want.

If you go the website for Duo Boots, they show you how to measure your calves (so that you can order boots from their website).

I don't know what average is, but you're clearly a bit larger if you can't buy boots in regular stores. (BTW, try Evans - their boots can come in larger calf sizes). In my whole life, I've only ever been able to buy 2 pairs of boots in regular shops. Instead I buy them from speciality sites like Duo.

As for dresses, Coast do lovely A-line etc dresses. Here are a few quick suggestions from their site for dresses that would work well. Notice the theme - they're all knee-length, structured dresses.

Sorry i meant they excentuate all the best bits and dont excentuate any of the worst bits. Hope that makes sense.

Congrats on avoiding tulip skirts, theyre basically like wearing a bubble around your hips. I have one that I love because of the pattern, but I have come to terms with the fact I look awful in it :(
