Best thing to do is log onto a price comparison website and make up a vehicle. Pop in your details with him as the named driver for a 1ltr polo and see what comes up.

    Try 123.ie or bestquote.ie

    Good Luck!

I'm 19, got my provisional not too long ago( though i am thankful i got it before the big rush before April 4th) I'd usually drive in or around very quiet roads or fields just to build confidence up. I probably over think too much (not a bad thing) but guess i'm just afraid i'll do something stupid. I hope to start doing more now in the summer, get a few driving lessons and be as competent as I can. Just want to be a safe, conscious driver and get from A to B safely, all that matters.

If you mean that you insure it in your name, add him as a named driver but really he's the main driver, then you're talking about insurance fraud, which if he crashes you can expect big trouble, as having your own vehicle, and having a 1L polo as a second car make it very easy to see who the main driver actually is.

Get him his own insurance, yes it will cost more, but it'll work out better in the end (legally insured and he gains some NCB, so insurance will drop drastically as it builds)

It should be alright if he only has a provisional licence to be a named driver.
When I was learning to drive (still have same car) my dad bought the car and put his name down as the owner.
My dad does drive it sometimes if he is going a short trip, less fuel than his 3.5 litre pickup :D

We then did that deal with Aviva, 6 months insurance as a named driver and 10 driving leasons, think it was about 400 euro, can't remember of the top of my head. If mum also has a licence put her down as named driver aswell so he can drive with you or her in the car.

Only thing was (releated to OP) my dads insurance on the car was higher than we expected, he has had a commercial (carpenter) insurance for nearly 30 years, so this was his first time on private insurance and they treated him like he was a 48 year old who has just passed his test, even though he has no points and was never involved in a serious accident.

Actually, it makes no difference whether you drive on a learner permit, or a full licence - challengemaster is still correct! If the son is the main driver of the car, then he should have his own policy. You don't accumulate any NCB with named driver insurance, either

I got that too - it was a great deal, I'd definitely recommend it to learners that are starting out. The only condition was that I had to drive with either of my parents, it couldn't be anybody else. It wasn't actually "named driver insurance", so much as "accompanied driving cover". I wasn't listed as a driver on the policy. I'm not sure of the exact details, but basically it is a contract with Aviva to cover you provided you are driving accompanied with those people who are on the policy.[/quote]
