honestly i think that being sucked into a contract with ANY provider is a bad idea in this day and age.

and o2 are not the most forthcoming or competitive of phone companies.

seriously in my opinion your best bet would be either buying an iphone straight from apple - which is unlocked, and then you can choose your provider and go payg OR buying an unlocked handset from someone such as adverts.ie and again choosing your payg provider. but being sucked into a contract is never a good thing

Didn't realise you could do this.

    Thanks.

Think this sounds best for me. Can you just use your own sim then once its unlocked? And continue topping up as normal?

    EDIT: OMG they're expensive. €499! :(

    I phone 16gb from 3 Network €239
    18 month contract. €40 x18 mths = €720

    Total. €959

    16gb I phone from apple store €599

    €959 - €599 = €360

    €360 /18mths. €20 per month

Will you be able to buy the talk time, texts & data offered by 3 on their €40 per month plan for less than €20 per month , if so buy from Apple and get your talk, text & data elsewhere

they do seem expensive. however - the prices from the likes of o2 are offset by the fact that you sign up to 18mth contracts. so they have you tied into paying like €45 per month for 18mths which is why they can offer you the phone at a discounted rate. if you got the phone from the likes of o2 on payg you would pay significantly more for it but STILL be tied to o2 as the phone would be locked to o2.

by buying directly from apple you get an unlocked phone and the choice of which provider you want to use and which kind of plan - wether payg or billpay - you want to take.

I have an iPhone 4 and I'm using it fine on meteor. Not a thing wrong with it. Just pop in to meteor and ask them for a microSIM and they'll port your number on to it. I'm PAYG too so you don't need to be on bill pay either. :)
