My Ipod is not being recognized

Forgive my ranting and raving...I've been having a little trouble with my Ipod. Yesterday, when I tried to connect it to the computer, I got no response. I tried to see if it would work in my DVD player, which is compatible with Ipods - still nothing. At first, I thought it might be attributable to a glitch in the Ipod's USB cable. However, having found another one this morning-no avail.

The only progress thusfar is that my laptop seems to have recognized the presence of a USB device, though it crops up in the context of "we do not recognize this". I've tried ye olde pressing the menu and select button down trick.

If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated, thanx.
