I was driving along and smoke comes from underneath the bonnet and subsequently the car stops. I pushed car into nearby carpark. It wouldn't start again. I got a mechanic to look at it and he says the engine is banjaxed.
Will my insurance company cover me i'm fully comp?

    Thanks for your answers

    Insurance doesn't cover mechanical breakdown.

get used engine from scrapyard, it would way cheaper, than repair old one.

must be a good mechanic using a technical term like banjaxed.

did he actually tell you what was wrong?

Presume it ceased due to oil starvation?

Sorry that was my phrasing of it, he told me that I would need a new engine. He said the turbo went and was drawing oil or something like that - i'm not mechanically minded - and this caused the engine to cease. I've priced around and the cost to replace and repair is circa €1,500 to €2,000. That is alot of money and thats why i was wondering would my insurance cover it?

What car is it? Was it not showing any signs of problems before this happened? The engine seized by the way not ceased!

No, your insurance won't cover it.

Out of curiousity.........what make is it ?.....I had to write off an otherwise good '02 car over a similar oil issue. Essentially, the repair was uneconomic............

I think that with the plethora of small turbo-d's now selling, the whole long-term durability of them will be an issue into the future.

A large part of the problem with that, is the inability and/or unwillingness of people in this country to maintain cars properly. Few people actually look after their cars, they wait until something gos wrong, and try to avoid spending any money unless the car stops moving

Thanks for all your replies, thanks too Element 12 for pointing out my error!
The car is a Renault Laguna 1.9. A week before it "seized" there was a noise from the engine and the garage I brought it into to have a look said the turbo was going. There was oil in it before it stopped. So it looks like its for the scrap heap? Thanks again

Do people think they're being super intelligent by saying "circa" instead of just saying "around"? Wrecks my head.

Number cars using renault diesel engines, and wouldn say it is expensive.

up 2 k for all !!! shop around.,

when i was working in garage, we got burned renault van for 500 euro with 1.9 engine , we put it in to laguna, worked well. Also brand new turbo will cost up to 600 euro (WAY CHEPER RECONDITIONED ONE OR MORE CHEAPER USED- GOOD CONDITION), engine itself would be 200 -300 euro, labour would be 250 -300 euro (one day work, if no need seek other parts). As i said ... shop around.

    God in heaven.

So let me get this straight.

Your engine seized, right OP? From the sounds of it, something big and bad must've blown up. Also from what I gather, a mechanic told you a week beforehand that there was a problem with the turbocharger. He told you it was leaking oil through the turbocharger.

    Is this right?

You chose not to fix it at the time.

So what I'm guessing happened is that enough oil leaked through the turbocharger and was burned through the engine that what was left in the sump wasn't enough to lubricate the engine properly. Then it seized. Smoke from under the bonnet suggest a big seizure.

You're lucky the thing didn't run away on you . A diesel engine will run quite happily on it's own oil.

Most diesels have an intake butterfly valve to stop a runaway diesel situation and to smooth shutdown.

Dartz the garage said the turbo was going but didnt really emphaise that it need changing there and then but only afterwards did I realise the mechanics of oil being sucked back in! Anyways on the look out for an "abandoned" laguna now...where does one start looking for one?

If you mean you want an engine for one start calling scrapyards for prices
