Does anyone live in / drive through Wicklow town? There is a new set of traffic lights and road markings that are a bit strange and I'd like someone to explain it to me!

When the red light shines stop

If its orange proceed with caution (if its flashing) or prepare to stop

If its green proceed with caution

Which set are you talking about?

If its the ones at the Forge bar I drove through a red light yesterday as I never realised they had been activated. The traffic lights in Wicklow town are ridiculous but then again the driving and pedestrians aren't much more intelligent

    It is, at that junction.

Coming from the direction of Tesco towards town.
There is a traffic light, yellow box, space after yellow box for one car, traffic light and pedestrian crossing. Traffic was crawling, so I has to stop before the yellow box, but then when I went the light went amber then red- are you supposed to stop in the space before the pedestrian crossing? I did, but then people coming out from the grand hotel towards the main street got a green and pulled across so I was blocking them. It wasn't clear if it was the light at the other side of the junction so I should proceed to clear it or if it is for the pedestrian crossing, in which case you stop (but in which case, the other road shouldn't get a green to encourage them to go and be forced to stop in the box).

I think the lights are placed ahead of the junction if that makes sense so that they can incorporate a pedestrian crossing thus avoiding putting in another set of light and all the wiring. In other words its cheaper but not necessarily better.

You should stop before the yellow box if going straight on or to the right once you see the amber light.

It is however a mess of a junction and was better before some planner was asked to have a brain wave

    Thanks for the reply.

I did stop before the yellow box at a green as I couldn't clear it in one go, when I started to move it went amber and red before I got to the other side. I know the rule is clear the junction but there is a space at the other end for a car before the crossing and I wasn't sure if I had to stop here- ie if this light is for the crossing. But then the Marlton junction got a green and the cars all came up behind me so I had to go- I can't see them getting a green only to be forced to stop in the box, so I should have kept going I presume. It's just a very funny layout, I don't know what the purpose of the space at the end of the box is for

Its in case you proceed and get caught by the pedestrian lights changing.

I thought that was might be it, but the pedestrian light is facing the pedestrians, not you, and it's hard to see it.

Its a poor layout and design to reduce costs

Ok, thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I don't mind if it's bad layout once it's not just me doing the wrong thing!
