    Hi Eveyone

Just wondering if anyone can advise me please.....

1st Off am cluless with cars

2nd am not a car snob so will look at daewoo - mercs I dont care

Driving a battered 1.9 dsl 1995 vw vento ....its practically a tractor .Its in bits and mechanic doesnt think it would be worth putting €1000 into it to see if it will pass nct .So I have about €1500 to spend and here is what I require

    NCT for minimum a year

Nothing bigger then 1.4 l engine (trying to keep tax/insurance down)

Mostly urban driving 15' k's a day odd trip throughout the year to dublin/cork/airport and a few weekends away

2 larger people so would look a bit squashed in a fait seicento !!!

Have been looking at 00/01 Renault Scenic/Megane , Hyaundai Accent , Fiat Bravo/Brava , Citroen Xzara , Mazda Demio , Renault Kango and saw a nice looking 00 Daihatsu terios for €1750 but have been told its not worth the money.

Am fit to tear my hair out.

Not interested in Ford's as I had both a fiesta and an escort before and hated the bloody things

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'd get a good condition, low mileage Accent for €1500, they are quite light on petrol around town and are not at all bad for what they are carwise.

Lexus lights and skanger me banger alloys. Also a 1.6 so doesn't meet the OPs requirements. Personally though if I was the OP I'd stretch to a 1.6 as the insurance and tax wouldn't be much more.

Hi Rover james.........just a query ...why would I change to a 1.6 engine ......for the driving I do what difference does it make.....I am genuinely asking cos I dont know the differnce !!

Purely so you'd have more options :)
In saying that the sub 1.4 will do perfectly, my Dad has a 1999 Hyundai Accent, it's a grand little car, I'd drive it every now and then.

What's wrong with Lexus lights? I'd rather see those than HID's!

A 1.8l or even a 2.0l family size car is much better value to buy (always has been, but now more than ever) than a smaller car and the running costs are only marginally more

And as RoverJames said, you'd have plenty more options. See the bangernomics thread which has shown us you can buy a perfectly decent car with a long NCT for a grand or less.

Price. Paradoxically small engined small cars hold their value better than larger cars. Running costs do not necessarilly increase that much. Something like this might fit the bill if you stretch to 1.6, 2 years NCT, 3 months tax and less than €1k because everybody is too interested in small cars to save money when in reality this would cost next to nothing to run. Ultra reliable too.

Ok I must be thick as the wall but surely my insurance , tax and fuel costs will rise significantly for a larger engine car or amI missing something here

really appreciate all the advice btw

They will increase but only marginally (usually) between a 1.4 and a 1.6 say.

This small increase will be offset (and probably more than just offset) by the savings in the cost price paid for the car.

Tax on a 1.6 is ~€110 more expensive per year, or €2 per week. Insurance difference will be negligible for almost anyone without a major black mark on their driving history, could even be cheaper. The difference in fuel used by a 40mpg car and a 35mpg car over 10,000km is about 100l, or 2l per week if you're doing 10,000km per year, that's €3 per week. The difference between many 1.4 and 1.6's will be much less than this.

If you save €500 on the purchase price on a 1.6 vs a 1.4, it'll take you 2 years to recover that in running costs, plus the opportunity cost of what you could do with the upfront €500.

And you'll be spending those 2 years in a bigger, better, safer, more comfortable and more spacious car :)

    Driving a battered 1.9 dsl 1995 vw vento ....i

    .

What are you going to do with the vento?

    opel astra 1.4 8v 96-98 astra 1.2/(1.4 8v) 98-04 or corsa 1.2 98-02

    toyota corolla 95-02 1.3

    nissan sunny 87-2000 1.3 or 1.4

    suzuki swift 1 litre 97- 02

    ford fiesta 1.3 98-02

    nissan almera 1.4 98 -04

lots of relatively cheap parts new and s hand and a good un can be very reliable and most garages now can fix and service them you can get these cars in earlier years but to far back and they are probably to knackered but with second hand cars condition is all ALWAYS ALWAYS AVOID ANYTHING WITH A TOW BAR FITTED many will contradict this but its up to you

Hey op I just spotted these three at your price range.......but I'd say you would be able to bargain them down even more if the seller was keen.
