Repeating first year

Ok well Im in first year arts and basically this semester has been quite bad for me so I failed some modules.... so basically due to certain rules and that, I would only be able to keep Spanish and Soc. and Pol. next year which I wouldnt want to do. So basically I've decided that I will repeat next year.

Now what I am wondering is how I should go about doing this, as in
    -who should I contact/talk to..?
-How much will I need to pay..?
-Should I bother doing the exams next month even though It won't really make much difference to the overall outcome?

Any advice AT ALL is greatly appreciated.

Why don't you take the exams? see how they go, if you fail them, you fail them. Then study over the summer and pass the exams you failed. Passing first year repeats are extremly simple, they pretty much give you the exact same exam paper as the first exam.

Its not called study week for noting :) everyone just crams the entre course into that one week. Look at past exams papers, see what questions come out the most etc etc. Passing is extremly easy.

And then go into second year witthout wasting another year.

Otherwise if you are 100% certain you want to take the lazy option and not study, contact the student advisor, each school has one. And they will set you up in what you need to do.

Well ya see I want to keep Spanish and Legal Studies to degree level, but you can't keep Legal Studies unless you pass first arts on your first sitting, and because I have failed French on my first sitting (before Xmas) I won't be able to keep Legal Studies. So that would leave me in the situation where the only option I have is to keep Spanish and Soc. and Pol. which I don't want to, so therefore my only option is to repeat the year.

So because of this should I do the exams like because it seems kind of pointless :/

Contact student advisor/mentors or even call into the student contact center? they can give the guarnteed information required for this situation, not some internet forum?

ie. what forms to fill out to repeats, what you have to pay when you repeat, even if yu repeat can you do what you want to do.

in terms of finances, you will not be entitled to any grant money if you repeat first year and any monies the county council may have paid towards your fees this year will not be paid for a repeat of the same year.

    whatever you decide good luck!

I really feel your pain. I am currently repeating first year and the same thing happened to me with the rule of passing everything 1st time round but with psychology. There's a woman called Catherine McCurry I contacted I don't have her details anymore but I'm sure you could google her on the nui website. I had a meeting with the dean of Arts hrough her and it was a lot of help. My story is exactly the same as yours and there's nothing they can do if the subjects just didn't suit you, mine was applied maths! So I decided to give the exams a go but didn't see the point wasting money on repeats when I knew I wouldnt pass. The repeat fee is 1600 inc. registration and student levies. This is all you have to pay the college for the year. If you had a grant you will lose it for the year but may be able to get it back if you pass the repeat year. I'm the same now having only 3 subjects to choose from for 2nd year. You can change your subjects you failed and these are the only subjects you will have to take in your repeat year. This is all I can think of atm about repeating and let me tell you its not as hard 2nd time round. Best of luck with the exams, you might as well give them a shot you never no you might pass ;) and if not at least you know what to expect. Good luck :D

Thanks so much for this. It's good to hear from someone who was actually in my situation. I just emailed Catherine McCurry this morning so hoping to hear back from her soon. With regards to the exams they are this week and I haven't opened a book for any of them because I was thinking that considering I'm determined for repeating, there doesn't seem to be much of a point in worrying about them even though I'm not going to pass some of them anyways... So do you guys think there is a point.?

just glad I could help! I'd say still take them, you only have to repeat what you fail so if you managed to pass any it would really help the repeat year. I was in the same boat and did'nt want to take them but by some grace of god I managed to pass the three. I'd say take them and really only concentrate on the ones you think you have a possibility in passing. you've got nothing to lose by taking them like! mine are this week aswel and the relief of only having one is unreal! you should give it your best shot and see what you can get out of the way for next year, best of luck :)
