Something I have been wondering since he apperaed on the scene a number of years ago.

Firstly I think it has something to do with him not being G.W. Bush and not a Republican.
Apparently we should all love the Democrats seeing as we are Irish, even though most probably share more Republican views on things like abortion, gay marriage etc when it comes down to it.

Secondly we think ourselves as a forward thinking cosmo people who look down on places like America as being backward and racist.
So when a black presidential candidate came along we though 'oh he must be great cos he is black and bucking the trend', even though a lot of people in Ireland are afraid to get into a taxi driven by an African.

Plus no one cared to to mention after his election that it was one of the most racist things that ever happened in America, i.e Black people came out in droves to vote for him just because he was black.

Thirdly it's his 'Irish' roots, even though he is probably as much Belgian as he is Irish.

All this is reflected is in the praise he got from this side of the world with the passing of the health care reforms last year.

To be honest not many people in Ireland should care about US health care as it does not directly affect them.

But there was all sorts of praise coming from Ireland on it, and here is why

    1. It's a 'I told you so' to the US, i.e. 'we knew you would come around to our (Europan, universal type heatlt care) way of thinking at some stage. Now all you need to do is convert to the metric system and make soccer your number one sport and we will all be happy.

    2. We all really care for the poor people in America who cannot afford health care.
