Coffee Making for Dummies!

So I took the plunge and bought myself a coffee maker. So it's not a top of the range or anything but I'll see how I get on with it and if I use it enough then we'll see what happens!!

I'm totally and utterly clueless about coffee, I pretty much only drink lattes, or if I have made some cream at home I'll make myself an instant coffee with sugar and a dollop of cream.

What coffee should I be buying? I won't be drinking it every day, it will mostly be used at the weekends. So, for my cappucinos, it's espresso coffee I buy right? and then if I'm making a jug of filter coffee what should I be looking for?

Big time tea drinker here by the way so go easy on me :D
