Botany Bay or GMB

    Hey,

I have quite a strong chance of being offered a room on campus next year. The thing is, my friend doesn't. I don't know anyone else going for campus so while I have no issue sharing an apartment with a stranger(I lived in halls), I wouldn't mind exploring other possibilities.

For example, I hear there is some apartments on campus (GMB perhaps) where you have your own bedroom/sitting room thing. This might not be true but is there something like this where I would kind of have a bit of privacy.

The main reason for this want for privacy is that I'll be in 3rd year while its likely that most people around me will be in 4th year so if I did have to share, i'd like to be as unobtrusive to those around me as possible. I'll be the only one of my friends living on campus and so it's quite likely that I'll have a fairly regular stream(Not too regular) of people visiting.

Thanks a million for your help

most 3rd years get dumped in Goldsmith.

But the GMB and house 50/49 have private rooms/bathrooms with a shared kitchen.

Yeah, he's right, unless you have a recommendation from DUCAC or something it's likely you'll be dumped in Goldsmith. You won't be out of place there though, it's full of 3rd year scholars. If you have a chance of getting somewhere nice though go with the GMB if you're not sure you'll have someone living with you. Botany is nicer but not if you end up living with some mentler who you don't know. You'll have a big enough room in the GMB to have friends over comfortably but sometimes it sucks to not have any social area, apart from the kitchen which you will most likely be sharing with at least one postgrad who will hate you if you mess up the kitchen or have any kind of party, ever.

I'm getting the room from a guarantee through the Central Societies Committee for my involvement in a society.

Is there somewhere specific CSC tend to put people or do they give people a degree of flexibility in choosing?

    Thanks

As someone who lives in the GMB I thought I'd provide some input.

GMB rooms are great, you get 2 single beds (one is sortof formatted as a couch), you get a nice desk/chair and another sitting chair. You also get your own bathroom/shower which is really nice. The only downside to living in the GMB is that your room and kitchen are separated, as in you have to use your keycard to get into both. It sortof takes away from the apartment atmosphere, but as you're living with people you don't really know the separation is kindof nice, and the rooms are big.

Although in my opinion, botany bay apartments are nicer. They also don't seem difficult to get, I don't know anybody (4th year) who applied to botany bay with another person and didn't get it. I would try to sort out with the CSC and see what sort of apartment they can guarantee you or whatever. Your order of preference should be:
    1. Botany bay with friend
    2. GMB
    3. Front square (could still get put with randomers and share shower/toilets but apartments are nice)

Don't take goldsmith, it's the same price as GMB and really really not worth it IMO.

Would anyone be willing to post a picture or two of the GMB rooms and kitchen. The society really wants to get a room thatll suit our needs. I know its a strange request but thanks in advance to anyone who helps.
