A few pre-test questions...

Hi, have a few questions about little things that I'm unsure of before the test, they're all silly little niggles probably, but I'd rather have them cleared up!

1: Can I adjust my passanger wing mirror before the reverse around corner manouevere? The mirrors are manually adjustable, so I would have to lean over the tester to adjust them.

2: Should I indicate on the turnabout or reverse around corner manouevere?

3: On mini-roundabouts, do you need to signal to take the 2nd exit going straight? I had a pre-test yesterday from a new instructor yesterday for a pre-test who said I didn't need to, whereas before I was told I had to.

4: If you are passing parked cars in a housing estate, and are pulling out to do so, do you need to indicate? The instructor yesterday said not unless there was another car approaching.

Thanks very much for any help you can give.

    1. This is terrible practise. You're expected to have all mirrors adjusted before setting off in the vehicle.

    2. You don't need to indicate on the reverse manoeuvre. You would on the turnabout to indicate to any oncoming traffic (from front or rear) that you're going to pull out.

    3. It's good practise to, but not necessary (I'm expected to be corrected on that!). It'll just make other drivers more aware of where you're going.

    4. For any initial manoeuvre you'll need to indicate in case any traffic comes. If you're in motion and there are cars to avoid you won't need to indicate (although he\she is right if there are approaching cars).

I'm not 100% on 3 or 4, so I'm sure someone else will correct me. Don't sweat the small stuff really. Just keep level headed and focus on being safe for you and for other drivers. Indicate in good time when\where you can and that'll get you by.

    Best of luck.

Yes! Signal after you've passed the first exit. A mini roundabout is still a roundabout. It can't do any harm anyway so definitely do it. I still do it driving around, not in test situations!

Of course you do! Good God, who was giving you your pretest?! Always indicate to overtake. The only difference within an estate is, if there's only one car to pass, don't cancel your right indicator until you've pulled back into position. However, if you're passing a line of cars, still indicate out but cancel your indicator once you've pulled out and drive on as normal. And remember to pull out in plenty of time, otherwise you'll get marked for reactions to hazards.

    Good luck!

Yes you can adjust your mirror for your manoeuvres if you wish. Just remember to put them back when you finish.

doesn't really give the best impression though imo.... I wouldn't do it anyway. I would set the mirror from the start that would be between highest and lowest for this.

    Why?

TBH I don't know really. My ADI told me to do that though. I did it on the test too and passed first time without any faults (except one for observation taking off but that's not relevent to this).

    Sorry OP if I'm wrong.

I just never heard anyone saying that before????? Strange!

If you leave your signal on, you could get marked for misleading signal if you have junction ahead.
To my knowledge you cancel the signal once you're out and if you're already out you don't signal.

The important thing is to slow down (if you need) Check, Signal (if you need) move out early (if you can) once you are out cancel signal.

I am only saying this because you can get marked for leaving the signal on and giving the impression you are turning where you are not.

I like what you said because it made me think and i had to ask "why".

It's funny, I never thought to ask him why! If I see him around I'll ask him and post back :)
