Hard Drive Enclosure

    Hi guys, 2 questions:

    1. The power connection is faulty on my laptop i.e I have to hold the wire in firmly or the power goes and it's not charging my battery.

Before, the bars on the battery symbol would go up 3 times and then stop on minimum when I plugged the wire in. Now, it turns off if I pull the wire out.

    Big problem? Fixable?

    2. If it's too expensive to fix, what's the name of the thing I could put my Hard Drive in so that I could access my old files on another laptop? Is it a hard drive enclosure or something? And if so, can you get a universal one or does it have to be specific to my model of laptop?

Not 100% sure, but it sounds like its the laptop charger socket thats fecked. If thats the case, ive never really heard of anyone replacing those.

As for the hard drive enclosure option. You dont necessarilly need an enclosure. You can get a Hard drive to USB adapter. I got one off Dealextreme for about $15-$20 (shipping is about 2 weeks) and it does all types of hard drives. You laptop hard drive is probably a 2.5" one.

Where abouts in Galway are you? I think I might have my USB to Hard drive adapter somewhere here if you wanted to borrow it. Send me a PM if you want and ill have a look for it.

    Hey Black Knight,

I'm actually heading off abroad very soon but thanks for your offer.

What's the difference between an enclosure and a Hard Drive to Usb adapter?

    Thanks.

You can get the enclosures on ebay for around a fiver. Fairly simple to remove the drive and put it into the enclosure, and boom you have an external hard drive!

ColHol explained it pretty good there. That's an enclosure. The USB to hard drive adapter is a temporary thing that plugs into your hard drive and the other end to another computer. Handy if you might need it for different drives.

Cool. sounds like an enclosure is what I need then.

    One size fits all?

2.5" for laptop hard drives. 3.5" ones are for desktop hard drives.

    Thanks BK.

So it doesn't matter which brand?

    Sorry to jump in.. :)

What model is the laptop? Some Laptops have a VERY easy to replace dc power jack some, not so easy, but all are replaceable.

    Some don't even need soldering.

If you can post the make and model, i can hopefully tell you what yours is.

    EDIT:

No, not the brand, but it does make a difference if it's IDE or SATA.

THIS is a twin dock/cradle that reads IDE and SATA both 2.5" and 3.5"

and THIS is a SATA enclosure

    THIS is an IDE enclosure

    - Both enclosures are for 2.5" (Laptop) Hard drives

Good to know. Cheers for that

I'm interested to hear there are laptops with easy, non-solder repairs for the power socket. I've had three damaged in the same way over the last couple of years. Two I got repaired, but neither survived very long afterwards (I guess the resoldered joints are not as strong as the originals).

Problem is caused (in my case, anyway) by using the laptop with power cable connected and then moving it, or the cable getting snagged. Over time these snags wreck the connector which is mounted on the laptop or notebook motherboard.

It's a very common problem for lots of people, I think; most people just throw their machine away at this point. Apple laptops use a magnetic connection which overcomes the difficulty - if it is tugged it just disconnects safely. For others, we came up with a solution called the LapTug. Sorry if this seems like advertising but I really think it is what you need to stop the problem recurring. It might also help prevent your existing laptop power socket problem getting any worse.

If you go for repair expect to pay 70-100 euros, though if yours is a simple fix it might be cheaper. And please fit a LapTug afterwards!

    Hope this helps.
