Is it a factory fitted CD/Radio Unit ? Does it have a CD Changer unit in the Boot of the card ?

There are 3 ways to connect an iPod/MP3 Player to a car stereo. The simplest method is via an AUX line input to the stereo. This will require the stereo to have some form of aux input available externally. The downside is that you have no control of the iPod from the radio units controls which is what I presume you're looking for.

Method 2 is to have a dedicated iPod Dock connector availble from the stereo. These were an option for older cars at the time of ordering though some higher end models came equipped as standard. Modules are available to convert some unit to allow a Dock connector though. Usually these hi-jack the CD Boot Changer bus lines to allow control of the iPod from the stereos front controls.

Method 3 is using the Griffen iTrip or equivelant. This uses a small FM Transmitter to broadcast to the car radio. Sound quality in my experience is disappointing and finding a blank channel can be difficult sometimes. Again you cannot control the iPod from the stereos controls with this method.

In Halfords today there were many Good quality CD/Radio units from Pioneer and Sony from about 120 euro all with iPod Dock connectors. Perhaps this is the most financially sound (pun intended ;) ) way to do it ? Facias and bezels are available for most make models of car to give the unit a decent look.

I have an 04 Mazda 6. Unfortunately there is no aux input in the car stereo in this model. I use one of the iTrip docks. It's handy as it charges the iPod and also fits my iPhone, while keeping it in a convenient place and the quality's usually quite good, not perfect but more than adequate. I use it all the time and I'm happy with it.

As for getting an aftermarket unit and facia, it's not an option. The dash is all one piece, not possible to just take the old one out and replace it.

What exactly would they have done for €295 and how would the iPod be connected and could it be controlled through the car radio controls?

I have a 03 mazda6 with full ipod connection,i can use the buttons on the steering wheel and it charges the ipod aswell. There is a connection at the back of the radio its beside the connection for the aerial it can be used for a cd autochanger in the boot but mazda don't do these because you can fit a 6-cd changer in the dash. The only problem is on earlier car's the port at the back is switched off and the only way it can be turned on is to take the hole radio out and take it apart. That is what i did but i heard on later car's the connection is on the only way of finding out is to buy an adapter on ebay(mazda6 ipod interface adaptor) there are 45 pounds and 10 for shipping. If your connection is off you need to take the radio out and take it apart then you have to short the circuit L716 to activate the port. It's a lot of work and you lose your cd player but it's worth it.If you buy the connection and it does'nt work you can always sell it on again.
