I went through customs in Shannon this week... I had a tiny amount of aftershave in a 100ml bottle... less than a teaspoon full.

Despite my protestations, it was confiscated... They said because of the size of the bottle???

Funny thing, in recent months I've brought the same bottle through customs on a few occasions without problem.

Are these people just being assholes??

Once it was a container of 100ml or less you should have been allowed carry it through.

Only containers of 100mls or less of liquids, gels, pastes, lotions and cosmetics may be brought through the passenger security screening points at all EU airports.

The previous poster is correct you should have been allowed to bring it through. I've thankfully never had a problem with this. I think you were just unlucky or the people working that day in the airport were over zealous I unsure of the rules (despite working there....).

You sure the bottle wasn't more than 100ml?
e.g. if you had a 150ml bottle, even if there's only 5ml in it, you can't bring it.

But once the bottle was under 100ml and fit in the transparent resealable bag, then you should be allowed bring it.

That said, I've had problems before in different airports in Europe where the security staff didn't seem to know the rules
