iPhone Repair - A Guide

    Hi Folks,

I thought I would write a thread to help clarify Apple’s repair policy. So what do you do when you have a broken or faulty iPhone?

Firstly, you need to decide if its broken or faulty. If you broke the iPhone yourself e.g. Smashed the glass by dropping it you do not have a legimate case for Apple to repair it. However if you iPhone develops a fault e.g. Speaker stops working all of a sudden, you may have a case for repair

    Note: Water Damage

iPhones are highly suceptable to water damage. They have two external sensors. One in the headphone jack, the other at the USB cable port. They are small white squares. They turn red in contact with water (This cannot be reversed) There are also internal sensors which are taken into account by Apple. Water damge is obviously not covered by warranty and as such a repair will be refused.

    Sending your iPhone to Apple

Ring Apple to talk through your problem and check if you are eligible for repair (1 Year Warranty)

    http://www.apple.com/ie/contact/

This is where you can choose two routes if you are eligible for repair:

    1) Standard Repair – This means Apple send you a box to send your iPhone back. It is normally delivered and collected by UPS. They bring the phone to Apple and the repaired unit is sent back to you by UPS. Usually you receive a refurbished iPhone. This iPhone may have old internals but a brand new case. You won’t be able to tell the difference between it and a new iPhone.
This option normally takes 7 working days. The replacement assumes the remaining warranty e.g. 1 year from the date of the original iPhone purchase

    2) Paid Repair – For a small fee (€29) Apple will send you a replacement iPhone when they come to collect your broken iPhone. They will also place a hold charge for the value of the iPhone on your credit card. The advantage is you are never without a phone as you receive a replacement when your broken unit is collected.
The €29 is non refundable. When your broken iPhone reaches Apple and is assessed the hold on your credit card will be removed.

Alternatively, you can drop into any Apples store worldwide. The only one in Ireland is in Belfast in Victoria Square (http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/victoriasquare/) Be sure to make an appointment if you can.

I booked mine in today and that was never mentioned, I'm waiting for the box in the post. Would have paid the money.
The power button is stuck. Didn't drop it or anything. Just lost it's clickeyness today.

Its also worth noting that the €29 fee doesn't apply if you have AppleCare - the Replace & Collent method is available to you at no extra cost, though you do have to provide card details in case you don't return the phone/return it late.
