Hey guys, I don't know if someone has asked advice on this already but I'm experiencing problems with the bluetooth on the Samsung Wave.
On my new macbook pro I'm able to bluetooth from the macbook to the Wave no problem but it won't work the other way around. On the macbook pro I am able though to click on Samsung Wave on the bluetooth list, then browse device but the only items I'm able to get are any items that have been bluetoothed to the wave from other mobiles. I cant get any of the photos or videos taken by the camera on the phone

I rang Apple & Samsung but to no avail (in fact, Samsung are uselsss at customer service...all she kept saying was "yeah, that's a compatibility issue")

Just wondering/hoping someone on here has advice for me???
I never had this problem on my old Powerbook!

Switch off Airport (wireless network) and try it.

Sorry I was a little distracted when I read the original post and thought your Mac wasn't accepting the connection from the phone.

Are you using the Samsung Kies software? I noticed on their website that the Windows software is called Kies, while the Mac software is Kies mini - which suggests to me that it has a smaller feature set.

Hey, only getting back to you now sorry. I downloaded that Kies mini & plugged in the phone & this is the lovely message I got:

"The current firmware version is not working on Mac OS.
Please reconnect your mobile to Mac after updating it with the latest firmware using Kies Windows version.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."

What is wrong with these stupid companies?! Why can't they just release a Kies for mac or else let that Kies mini perform the function?!! Gggggrrrr...

You should be able to bluetooth on the mac without any extra software. I had a similar issue with my mobile until I switched Bluetooth sharing on on my Mac: System Preferences/Sharing

Samsung customer support (for Mac) is fairly poor. I have a printer thats *supposed* to work with Snow Leopard but half its (scanner) features are missing! I wouldn't say to avoid Samsung products for the mac but I would double check that they are 100% compatible before buying...your on your own if things go wrong.

I am intrigued by this problem. How can there be a difference between Windows and Mac Bluetooth? I always assumed Bluetooth was a standard much like USB however this does not appear to be the case.
The genesis of Bluetooth is described in this old article and from the beginning there appeared to be difficulties ( much like the Beta /VHS battle ). Bluetooth is an association rather than a standard ( de facto maybe ).
I note Samsung is not in the original group however both Apple and Samsung are members.

I have a Samsung GT-15500. I can send and receive files to/from the phone and browse it via Bluetooth albeit only the memory card and not the phones internal memory !

My issue is that While I can see the folders on the memory card I cannot see any files within them ! For example I can't see any photos I've taken on the phone or that I've sent to it !

I suspect this may be more an Android issue than the phone itself though. Any thoughts ?

Using OS X 10.5.8 on a PowerMac Dual G5 by the way.

    AFAIK there isn't any difference.

Sorry, I've no idea what the issue could be. All I can suggest is if you were able to try it on a Windows or Linux machine you'd be able deduce if it was a phone or an OS X issue.

You could try asking over on http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php

I have done some further research and found that
    AFAIK there isn't any difference.
    is not exactly true.
Bluetooth is not implemented fully by all participants, for example the Object Push Profile ( using OBject EXchange ) which is on the Samsung Wave is not on the iPhone ( or maybe it is! ). Seems there is a relaxed implementation of this 'standard' and each device has different capabilities.

    The iPhone isn't a mac ;)
Apple (shamefully) deliberatly crippled the bluetooth functionality on the iPhone . It was speculated that the reason for such Luddite behavior was as a sop to the phone compaines. The reasoning being that iPhone users would be forced to send photos, mp3 via multimedia message. It also stops users (easily) bypassing itunes for transferring photos etc.

That kind of self-interested (to the determent of their customers) attitude from Apple drives me bonkers.

    .

Thank you for the insight ;)

My point is that the Bluetooth 'standard' is implemented differently by manufacturers and even between devices. The OP's issue is between a Samsung Wave phone and a Mac laptop which may just specific to those devices. There maybe workarounds such as your suggestion to turn on Bluetooth sharing or something like in my link.

I would suggest that Apple are not the only manufacturer who are self interested. Excerpt from my lawsuit link
Lest we forget, the rarest outcome in such legal tussles is for an actual judgment to actually be handed down, so the greatest likelihood is that this will just lead to another round of grudging handshakes and licensing going one way with money going the other way
    Money is the bottom line.

Simpler than that. Because of their agreements with record labels and movie studios, Apple deliberately crippled BT functionality to stop people sharing between phones.

    Ok I think I know what's going on here :) It's a permissions thing with Android !!

By default the memory card is the "home" folder when browsing via bluetooth. This can be changed as follows :

    Go to the home screen.
    Tap the "My Files" icon
Then tap the menu button (On the GT-15500 it's the button on the extreme left directly under the screen) again and select "More" then "Settings" - There's a menu option to "Set Home Directory". Adjust as required.
This will decide what the default folder will be when browsing via Bluetooth. By default it's the root of the installed SD card.

To allow your computer to see files via Bluetooth:

    Tap the "My Files" icon.
Once here select the directory which contains files you want to share via bluetooth. In my case I want to be able to see my photos so I selected the DCIM folder then the "Camera" folder.

Once the Camera folder is opened displaying the contained files press the menu button.

Now select the "More" option on the screen.

    Select "Bluetooth Visibility".

You are now presented with a list of the files within the folder with a crossed out/greyed out Bluetooth symbol to the right of the file name.

Tap the icon beside each file to turn this to a blue uncrossed icon. The files that you alter here will now become visible when browsing via bluetooth.

This doesn't appear to be specific to Macs, could just as easily apply to Windows via Bluetooth. It's a security precaution I suppose !!

Let me know how this works for you !!
