Mains smoke alarms do have 9v batteries in them too.;)

Its a fail safe,if the mains power is cut off.

The smoke alarm head slots off its bracket, just like a battery operated 1 does.

Inside the head is the 9v battery.

I have a mains system in my house with 3 smoke/fire alarms on it (1 kitchen,i living room,1 landing area) and all 3 alarms have a 9v backup battery aswell.

The battery needs to be replaced, that's why it's beeping. The idea is that in the unfortunate event of having a fire occur during a mains failure, the battery will power the alarm and potentially save lives.

If you can't get at it to replace the battery you should get someone else in to do it pronto.

On one of the very few nights I've gone out in the last year I got a call to say that there was a loud beeping noise after starting ..... unbelieveable ! It was a fire alarm battery that wanted me to come home and I had no choice .... luckily I wasn't too far away and was able to get out again....
