Recent delivery notice from An Post left me kind of confused. I need to pay customs charges nearly 20 EUR on a small parcel from the States containing two boxes of contact lenses. The value is around 60EUR, so not anywhere near 120-150EUR of recently (year 2008) raised limit for small parcels imported from non-EU countries. Could anyone confirm that this charge is being applied rightly??? I called customs in Athlone, they showered me with laws, numbers, explanations etc., resulting in more confusion (on my side) and them basically saying I need to pay. Full stop. But are they right?
    Thanks
    Tomas

It is probably VAT and not duty that you are been asked to pay.

And handling fee and the total charge they base it off is value of content + cost of shipping.

That's the duty limit. VAT limit is €22.

Sounds right, basically €2.15 for every €10 you spent plus the €6 an post handling fee

That sounds about right. I paid about the same on a present I ordered from the US for Christmas, which was worth just over €60. I order contacts from getlenses.nl, they're worth checking out.
