    Hi,

Anyone know of a good GP for dealing with depression issues? PM me the details if you know of someone suitable.

    Thanks,

Any GP will probably refer you on to a specialist. If you don't feel comfortable talking to your current GP about it I can recommend Patrick Meaghar in Knocknacarra.

How long is a piece of string, if the patient is dealing with the issues then they should try a few different GPs to see which one 'clicks' with them. Even if depressed they would know in a very short time whether the GP was suitable or not.

I understand that up to 20% of the population have depression at some stage in the west. Most of them have an episode...sometimes even a many year episode..and learn to deal with it for the rest of their lives. Others have bouts and yet others have a lifelong problem. Sometimes they have a damn good reason to be depressed, eg bereavement.

If the patient is not dealing with these 'issues' at all I suggest a chat with the psych ward in the hospital to see if a psychiatric social worker could informally speak to them first and let the GP business follow from that conversation.

I went to my GP a few years back because I wasn't feeling 'normal'. I didn't really know what depression or anything like that was.

He told me that I needed "a kick up the a**e."

I was stunned so I went home.

As the months passed I felt worse and worse, until a family member convinced me to go to a different doctor. I went to Dr. Fergal Colohan in the Galway Shopping Centre who told me I had post traumatic stress disorder and severe clinical depression and I was admitted to hospital.

So basically, make sure that the doctor is suitable. My ignorant former GP cost me a lot.
