Meteor && Huawei E180 && Ubuntu && Modem hangup

Has anyone else been having trouble with the Huawei E180 on Meteor lately?

Since yesterday (Sat 26//03/2011) I've been having huge problems connecting my
Linux 1201n 2.6.32-28-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 23:42:43 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

to it.

Tailing /var/log/messages I've been seeing stuff like
pppd[2976]: Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.4/nm-pppd-plugin.so loaded.
pppd[2976]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
pppd[2976]: Using interface ppp0
pppd[2976]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyUSB0
pppd[2976]: CHAP authentication succeeded
pppd[2976]: CHAP authentication succeeded
kernel: [ 1774.916850] rtl8192_SetWirelessMode(), wireless_mode:4, bEnableHT = 0
pppd[2976]: Modem hangup

That "modem hangup" seems to be the key google phrase. I've found reports that the network manager is bugged and can't properly recover from the ISP shutting down the connection unexpectedly or something.

For me I seem to have to repeatedly (for up to 30 mins) keep
sudo killall NetworkManager && sudo killall modem-manager

and then attempt to reconnect. Eventually it seems to work.

I have made absolutely no system changes to precipitate this, so I'm worried that Meteor have made some Windows friendly but Linux unfriendly change which is going to make my life hell. On the other hand, and hopefully, it could just be a temporary blip in their otherwise thoroughly useless service.

Anyone else seeing this and able to shed any light or helpful tips? No point asking the shams at Meteor for help.

Meteor data hadn't been working properly since Friday, there's threads in mobiles & PDA and consumer issues, the seem to be having ip problems that's why you can connect the odd time once you get allocated an ip.

Ah thanks for the info. Maybe I'll call Meteor Customer Support tomorrow and see if they know anything about it, just for the laugh.

You could also remove the possibility of Network Manager causing the issue by running the connection from the command line. See http://johnlewis.ie/mobile-broadband-from-the-command-line-in-ubuntu/
