im considering ordering a road bike online from one of theese suppliers. the alloy ultegra canyon seems to be an excellent price at approx 1200 euros. would anyone know what import tax/ duties are due on theese ? from what ive been able to find out when they are imported from within the eu there is no fees due :confused:

also would local bike shops be prepared to do maintainence on theese internet bikes

why does it cost 145 euro for ribble against 40 euro for canyon for delivery

Because Ribble are stupid. They've said a few times they'll look into it, but apparently haven't done anything yet (assuming your information on shipping costs comes from them).

I bought a Focus Cayo from Wiggle and never had any problem with LBS taking it in for service.

No import tax or additional charges should have to be paid. Don't see your LBS wouldn't be willing to service your bike. It won't be for free though.

If you by a bike from Ribble you can make you own shipping arangements. A boardsie did so a while back for about €30 using shiply.com.

you are probably into a difficult area if bike is damaged in transit. it would then be down to the carrier youved used to rectify .

i am eagar to see ribble response to del charges ???

Many thanks for this information, I have forwarded this onto the boss who deals with such things. The problem may be that our bike boxes exceed their maximum dimension limits.

    Thanks for the response.

Planet-X use DPD to ship to Ireland (http://www.dpd.co.uk/). The tariff for DPD Classic is here:

    http://www.dpd.co.uk/dpd_european_tariff_guide.pdf

It says £24.95 for the first 5kg, then £1.45 per kg after that, up to a limit of 31.5kg.

I imagine a boxed bike will be about 15kg, which is £40-ish at those rates.

I hope that my two Planet-X bikes will not leave me for disclosing this.

Any chance that you could change your carrier?

Unfortunately our regular carrier will not export bikes due to the size of the parcel so we have to use a different carrier who charge us exactly what we state on the site. I’ve no idea who Planet X use and do not know how it is so cheap.

    Enquiry

Why is your shipping to Ireland still so expensive? Currently it's about £136. Planet-X charge about £50. I help run an internet cycling forum in Ireland, and loads of people get enthusiatic about the Ribble bikes....until they see the shipping charge. Then they buy a Planet-X.

On the little bit of reading I've done on the two marques, I'd personally go for the canyon over the ribble. I especially like the fact that there's a high level team riding 'em (Pharma Lotto).

Yes. I am swayed by such things.

Having said that, I regularly go out (cycling!) with a fella who rides a ribble and it seems like a fine bike, if a bit on the heavy side for a carbon fibre frame.

its obvious ribble dont want to get into shipping to ireland they are obviously happy enouygh shipping to the uk. (ad considering some of the wait times for the ribble frames over the last couple of years (was thinking of one myself but there was a 3 month wait) they dont need to worry about it either

High level teams simply ride the bikes whose manufacturers pay them the most ;)
