    Hi

Im having a look at a 2006 Volvo S40 2.0D tomorrow with 81,000. What should I be looking out for? Should the timing belt be changed at this stage?

    Cheers

Check out all error messages if any on the dashboard. Had the recent experience of the ASB module needing replacement due to the "antiskid disabled" error coming up out of the blue. was changed under extended warranty but will cost you 1100 € for the pleasure if it is gone.

Don't think the 2.0 D has a DPF filter, but with 81K ask if there is any service history to review and see if the top up for the DPF was ever done.

As with all Volvos, check every thing electric works.

Other than the ABS, never had any issue with the car, mine is a 1.6D

2.0d does have a DPF afaik.

Easiest way to tell if the DPF is on the way out is to listen for the regeneration cycle. It sounds like the fan, if the cycle is not finished it will stay on for a few minutes after the engine is switched off. If the DPF is getting blocked up then the regeneration cycle will be more frequent.

I had to replace the DPF on my old S40 at 85k miles and before it finally died the regeneration cycle would come on every few days until it didn't come on anymore and the car went into limp home mode.

Thanks guys. Is the DPF expensive to replace?

The car is from a garage that I will be looking at which provides a 6 month warrenty.

If either the anit-skid ABS warning comes up or the DPF goes would this be covered under the warrenty you think?

    Thanks

Depends on the terms and conditions of the warranty. Some used car warranties are bumper to bumper which means everything is covered. Others just cover the minimum requirement i.e. engine and gearbox. Ask the dealer to clarify what is and what isn't covered.

Replacement DPF cost me the bones of €1k which was from a main dealer and even that was after they shaved an hour or two of labour off for goodwill.

If the car is from a main Volvo dealer the DPF should be covered, would say other dealers would wangle out of it. Have heard that the DPF can be power hosed but would reckon you would only get a few months if that long out of it. Might be something some dealers might try and do if there is a probelm.

    You're learning!

Try Spirit Motors in the Sandyford estate, main Volvo and trying to flog me a new one last week. Worth a look.

That's crazy money for the silver one.

Are these anti-skid messages just on diesel models?

It's the ABS/Traction Control unit, on both petrol and diesel models.

Yea no way was I going to pay that money for it but it was still worth a look.

Having a look at another one today so fingers crossed no warning messages but if it does I think I'll have to start looking at other cars.

    2005 2.0 V50/S40 does not have a DPF.

I think they started installing them in 2006/2007

At last I seen an S40 wit no error messages.

2006 metallic grey SE pack with 81,000 miles. Looking forward to it :)
