Hi folks need some advice on the right diesel car to buy, doing 200kms a day in my petrol Honda Civic Type S 2008 costing me a fortune so will have to trade in. Which diesel to buy is the question? Opel Insignia/Skoda Octavia/VW Passat/Peugeot/Toyota/Honda Accord or any other suggestions want a decent bit of power comfort, economy & looks. Used to the 140bhp power the Type S provides and the comfort of cruise control.Any advise welcomed.

    Octavia vRS cr170
I do approx same mileage as you do and I get around 44mpg while the car has a bit of poke as well. You will need to get something with a bit of poke dropping from a Type R Civic

    His is a type S.

I would think a type S Civic would return close to 40mpg if doing 200kms/day. OP, what mpg are you seeing from it. The cost to change may well make it pointless to trade in for a diesel.

I'd imagine a type S is pushing 35mpg while cruising, although it all depends on the road and speed.

Any of the VAG diesels should push 55-65mpg while cruising at 90kph on a motorway.

Plus factor in the actual cost of fuel, diesel is about 5-6 cent per liter cheaper then petrol at the pumps now. Its a good difference while filling at the pumps.

Hi,if I were you,I'd go for either a corolla d4d 1.4,decent car & great economy,or if that's too small, get the avensis d4d,& also get the manual gearbox as clutch jobs etc are much easier & consequently cheaper to get done. Or the Octavia tdi is a good car.same rule for the gearbox.

Just drop your speed by 5mph and keep the Civic..

Some good points to note there folks.Basically blowing 140 euro a week on petrol, annual road tax 400 plus, depreciation on the the Type S due to mileage it's value will be hammered in the long run too. As it is garages offerin only 13000 for it and it only has 38000kms on the clock.
I love the car but due to increase in size of family and want to be economical on a daily 200km round trip plus being comfortable and with that bit of oomph when needed, I think she'll have to go :(

get the new peugeot 508 which is just out. if you want power get the 2.0 hdi. its the newest car out in its class

Why not look at the Civic diesel? 140 bhp and 55 mpg. It would be the same power and room as what you have.

I couldnt disagree more with this. If the OP has lost the will to live, I would suggest he get a corolla or avensis. I also wouldnt be recommending a manual gearbox in any diesel nowadays especially not an Octavia.

Currently averaging 6.6ltr/ 100km approx 43 MPG which isn't bad I suppose for a petrol, 68 euro to fill the tank each time.

ok im looking to trade my car soon. I have a car that does approx 40mpg and seems to absolutely drink petrol lately.
Im going to change to a diesel family saloon or small family car and was wondering which car would be the best fuel wise. what is the new fluence or the toyota corolla like on diesel??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 230 ✭✭Eleganza

my 1.5dci megane coupe 110bhp with EDC box returned 4.8l/100km on a 220km motorway round trip today. I expect any 1.5dci megane/fluence to return similiar.
    4.8l/100km is 58mpg approx.

what would be normal return . ie including urban milage ? how reliable are renaults. im tempted by the fluence but just dont know how reliable the renaults cars could be?

There actually quite a few of them, and in the middle lane of the M50 too

Lads 40+ mpg from a petrol is great. I'm averaging 41 mpg consistently from a full tank in a vRS Octavia diesel. I do mostly motorway driving but that's also including town driving at evenings and weekends. Would touch high 40s easily on N roads but if I were ye I'd be keeping your cars.

Could you elaborate on this point a little bit please, Was looking at a diesel auto but the fact it was not manual was putting me off because never had one before

im getting from 37 to 40 mpg from my petrol car at the moment. seems to be hard on petrol in my opinion

Completely depends on the car and the type of driving.

Anyone looking for a diesel car should look at the Kia Ceed, either the saloon or the estate,it is very economic, very comfortable,€156 tax and cheap to buy.

I think people in this thread are mixing up petrol usage and the cost of petrol

40mpg+ in a petrol is very good regardless of how much it costs to fill unless the difference in the cost of diesel and petrol becomes massive

Well with an auto, you are cutting out the dual mass flywheel issues that are haunting most modern manual diesel cars.
Sure there are some troublesome autos but do your research into the exact model auto you are looking at and you will find out if they generally have issues or not. Modern autos have also overcome much of the poor efficiency that was once an issue. If you are buying an executive style car, its a no brainer tbh to get the auto.
