Hi all, when using safari, when you press a link, a windows is open that gives you the option to open the link in a new window.

If this option is choosen, safari opens the link and it flips to the new window.

Is there any way to open the link but stay in the original window? Hence, avoid having to flip back?

    Cheers, g

No because then it wouldn't be able to open the link. Only one tab is active at a time. You can't have one loading or doing anything else in the background. The iPad isn't able for this.

The latest version of Opera Mini (6) behaves like this. It was updated for Android recently, should be updated for iOS soon I imagine.

Does opera need to reload the pages very time you switch between them like iOS?

The page reloads are due to limited RAM. I believe the iPad 2 is much improved in this regard.

No, it does not, that was one of the things that drove me mad about Safari. It is a lot faster all round, back, forward and switching tabs is baaically instantaneous. It also uses an optimizing/ compressing proxy that gives a massive speed increase on slower connections (and reduces data usage) - the cost is how nice your images look but image compression is configurable. I prefer it to Safari for mobile use certainly.

It is not just limited RAM, as other browsers manage it fine withour reloading, and web pages are not that big. It could cache to flash to avoid reloading if RAM was the problem. Simarly with the load in the background, there is nothing in the OS or hardware preventing this, it doesn't even need a multitasking OS as it is all handled by the one app.

Opera seems to be an iPhone app. No iPad version.

I think Safari in 4.3 already does this and it's not exactly fast. It takes as long as a refresh. Probably works a lot better on the iPad 2 though.

Oh and try out Atomic Browser, OP. It can load tabs in the background. However, I find it a lot slower and clumsier to use than Safari.

Thanks all, I need certainly to try a couple of diffent browsers allright.

I like Safari though, but I really miss being able to open all the links from a page that I want to read first, and go througn them later.

    Try a browser called "Grazing".
Terrible name but has the best implementation of tabbed browsing on the IPad in my opinion. Atomic is a good choice also but I find the actual size of the tabs slightly too small for switching between browsing by touch.
