Does the students union need a communications officer?

I have noticed especially this year that information is coming out too late and there is not enough detail of information. The itbsu.ie website doesn’t get updated and neither does the twitter account, the posters tend to be very bland and oddly positioned.

The only route of information I see is email but the majority of students don’t read their mail because they get sick of the constant “Lost/found [insert personal item here]” or “[REG] lights left on”

So what do you think would a communications officer solve this problem or should it keep going the way it is?

I'd say deffinately... either a new person... or add the role onto a current position. It's seems to much hassle for the su to manage all the different news streams they can use, especially when they have no definitive avenues that they all use. One person doing it all would cut out some major messing about and mean the stuff is published in a regulour fashion to allow for people to be able to expect it. At the start of the year we had about 20 a day... and at the moment it is usually between 4 and 5 people who register on the su site per day. News posts are rarely added to it... but if they were then these registered users would be getting info on events... seems a real waste. But as I said already, there's so many ways for the su to post news email/fb/twitter that generally they just seem to leave out the others and stick with email. Which I'd say is due to time constraints.. ie can't spend ages sending out info on one thing. But if there was someone whose task it is to do that.. well then it'd happen ;D

If their part-time salary doesn't disrupt funding to events or clubs/socs, then +1 I think we need one :D

I think it'd be a great idea to have alright. People could go direct to that officer and they could middleman things instead of a load of things being thrown up on the C&S or Pres ,etc, desk. It'd enable the SU to run smoother imo anyway.

i'd support ya, you're one of the most social people in the college, mr. know it all should tell all :)

A note to add though, this comms officer would not just a person to dispense information to student, but should be the go to person for other colleges Student unions.
Just last week there was a gaming LAN run by the DIT gamesoc, it would have been quite useful if they had a person to contact so that they could get the emails to our college aswell.

Sorry lads just to clear up a few things. The position can only be brought in as a "work group" person or persons selected or voted in by the president to accomplish a task. So technically it could be brought in right now but to be an offical position it would need to wait untill the year after next.

Please correct me if im wrong but the position should not be paid, part time positions are not paid they are given expenses e.g clubs+socs officer needs to travel and keep a mobile as does the vice and ents. A communications office needs a computer and a printer both supplied by the SU so no monies.

But all that said thanks for all the replies, it will definality be going in my manifesto

i ****ing hate red tape, i know is stops the impulsive people, but it also stops intelligent and fast people, 18 months is a long long time to introduce something so friggins simple.

Agree with xios 18months is ridiculous. I'm willing to do it FOC anyways so if ur elected vin keep me in mind.

I completly agree, it is a lot of red tape BS but the rules are there for a reason. You can't allow someone to generate heaps of SU positions just because they want to.

Anyway if I get in as the president the position will be there from day one as an unpaid untitled position. There will of course be benfits, can't have people doing it for nothing in return.

Surely one of the benefits will be to allow the commuinacations officer to hire Peter Parker for some more of those fantastic spiderman shots. .... ;D lol had to be said.

    :D

Sure, this college crys out at night, needs a protector, he answers it's call.

Whenever the canteen serves yesterdays sausage rolls, he is the person who put the breakfast baps on the opposite counter.

Whenever someone jams the rotating door in c-block... he is the one to do it back to them laters.

Whenever the corner shop just sold this weeks set of notes for that class you really REALLY need them for... he is the one who reminds her to check again .. just in case ;D

He is the only person who can fix those windows with missing handles... why are their so many lately??? XD is someone building their own house out of bits and bobs they 'pick up around college'????

His last known location was writing on that wall in the gents in a block... writing that epic for loop on the wall that I see nearly every day XD

Some call him a menace... that someone shouldn't have that kind of power... that he should turn himself in... all I know is, he is... itb's spiderman
