    Hi all,

I'm new to cycling, well I haven't done much since I was a teenager with a mountain bike! I've had a pretty busy year and have gotten out of shape! I have a month off coming up and a group of friends are planning a trip to cycle from the north of Spain to Croatia. Its going to be relaxed as possible with the aim to enjoy ourselves and hopefully get back in shape. We are planning on doing this over about 3 weeks averaging about 100km a day. There is one experienced cyclist in the group and the rest will be about my level (we've all had a tough year)

I have run a marathon in the last year so I'm not completely hopeless but I'm big enough at 191 cm and about 100kg.

I have no equipment related to cycling at all so I was hoping I could get some tips on the type of bike I should get and the equipment I should bring, keeping in mind I have to carry it all with me and I'm trying not to break the bank!!

All suggestions are welcome (as long as they are positive:D)

    Thanks
    Where To Begin

How much time do you have to train for it? 100km daily is pretty intensive to be aiming for for a beginner. However. Last summer me and a couple of friends (early mid 20's and reasonably fit) trained for a charity ride, 300km over two days. We spent four months training for it. A month before the ride one of the guy's mother decided to do it too having not cycled in years, she had just done a marathon so had a good fitness base like yourself. She ended up completing both days in a quicker time cycling alone than we did as a group!

Depending on how much gear you bring with you 100km daily for 3 weeks probably wont be that relaxed. I was travelling light through France and found 70-80km a day to be a nice pace.

Do a search for touring threads here, there are loads. Brilliant blog here of blorg's tour from Ireland to Istanbul, might be some overlap with your intended route.

Best of luck, sounds like a great trip. Some beautiful countryside along the med and plenty of sights to keep u interested.
Get a comfortable bike that's big enough for you and a padded touring saddle.
Start early each day and you will have no trouble doing 80-100km.
