    Hi all

I'm thinking of taking my boyfriend to Venice for 2 nights for his birthday. Could anyone recommend any nice hotels in Venice itself, that's not over expensive as I'm really on a budget. Thanks a million

Depends on your budget. We went with the nearest we could get to St Marks Sq for the budget we had and the very best we could do was €160 per night B&B, so a total 4 night stay for 2 cost €640

When booking, and looking at a map of Venice, the Canareggio region seemed a bit cheaper, but my other half vetoed it because he said it was to far away, but in reality and having been to Venice, I could walk around it forever it's one of those cities and it's a small city so it wouldn't take long. Restaurants in the Canareggio region were much cheaper too (and there's a McDonalds there if the budget is REALLY tight :D) Near St Marks square and Rialto bridge you will be charged extorionate prices to eat. If you're tempted to stay on one of the islands though, be warned public transport is quite expensive. The vaporetto costs about €6.50, the boat from the airport (Marco Polo) cost about €13pp, a water taxi will set you back over a hundred

It's a beautiful city though, you can stand in St Marks square at night and listen to the live music playing and don't pay a single cent unless you sit down to eat or drink

We stayed in this hotel http://www.locandaquerini.com/ in July 2009, when we were there it cost €70 per night for the room and breakfast for 2 (€35 per person). It was a last minute booking made the day before we arrived so we were pleasantly surprised to find that we could walk to St Mark's Square in 5 minutes. Breakfast was basic - croissants, juice, coffee - but there was enough to keep you going until lunch.

If you're on a budget I'd recommend it, the rooms were basic but clean, with en-suite and air conditioning included.

The area around the train station seemed lively enough in it's own right, by day anyway. At night, St Marks square is the place to be, at least for one night anyway it's a must see so I don't know what the rest of the city is like but there's not much of a nightlife scene in Venice anyway but it's great for a relaxing romantic holiday
