Looking at buying Porsche Boxster S 3.2 and test drove one today. I have been reading up on IMS issues with sudden engine failure etc and seeking any advice on what I need to watch out for and any preventative maintenance that I need to budget for during ownership. (Currently M5 owner and over on M5 Boards)

Any help or advice much appreciated!

Phil? If it isn't Phil don't mind me. The only image prob with a Boxster is you'll always have some muppet saying 'Oh, couldn't afford a 911?' - once you know to expect that, the 3.2's a beautiful machine to drive, much more so than the 2.7

Mechanical probs I don't know enough about, so I'll let others comment on that.

Yep very aware of the whole poor man's 911 quote regarding Boxster etc but looking to pick up for weekend use. Have S2000 on the list too but very few for sale

Friend of mine's knowledgeable enough about all things Beetly Porsche, he's got a few 911's and a Boxster 2.7, I'll ask him and see what he says.

Wow, M5 to Boxster S is a strange move. I had a Boxster S 3.2 and thought it was kinda meh myself. Horrible engine to drive and listen to IMO. Ive pissed many fans off saying that though.

Oh ok, Id be totally on for a Boxster S for messing about on Weekends and fine weather! I had it for 2mths or so as a daily driver and I would not want to use it for that purpose for any length of time.

Every time I think of a Boxster I think of the Ralphie quote from The Sopranos... "A Boxster is like a Porsche with panties."

What you would suggest for two seater?

Can't imagine any car in this price range as good to drive as a 3.2 Boxster to be honest. And the badge, re-sale value etc., so not sure if there's a better car.

Its convertible mid engined, and drivers great. Theres very little else that ticks all those boxes. A MRS maybe. Personally I love the roof down experience.

I find most people who slag it off aren't really into drivers cars. They are too used to over tyred, over powered cars.

    Thanks BostonB

Funny enough I had a MRS for few months last year which I bought for herself but she couldnt get insurance quote as had not passed her full test then.

Sold it New Years eve and nippy for 140bhp with good handling.

    Cheers the Boxster buying guide!

If it's only for weekend use, who cares! :)

Anyways, I don't think the boot in the Boxster is any better.

850CSI is the dream, how much did you pay for yours if you dont mind me asking?Ive seen plenty of 840i's for sale here but no 850csi. Even the old 850ci's dont seem available any more here.
In the UK csis still fetch big money and dont seem to depreciate. I guess its as there was only 1000 ever sold there and 1/3 must have been written off by now.

As it happens the UK is the cheapest source of CSi's on the planet, its just big money relative to the other E31s. I paid about £13k plus EUR4500 VRT (I think). The same car in Germany would be 25k+ and in the US, sometimes $40k+.
There were only 160 RHD 850CSi's which is why wont see many outside of car shows and me from Friday to Sunday. :)
Afaik VRT on them is even less than EUR4500 now.

I just put Ford Motorsport 19# Injectors in mine this morning, slightly overkill, going off to test drive now. Its a hilarious car to drive, though quite scary on the old maintenance front. :D

PS: To vaguely tie this back to the point of this thread, I part-traded the Boxster S vs the 850CSi and my brother has a 350z, so we have hands on all the cars mentioned.

Genuinely the Boxster interior is the same level of quality as the Nissan (ie both quite iffy and plasticy) and the sound system much worse. Its got two "boots" of course, but both are small. The Z has more usable space (inc strut bar) and you dont have to get out of the car to get everything (the interior cabin is tiny on the Boxster).

Have you considered an M3 (Cab or Coupe)?

How about a Caterham or a Westfield if you are looking for a weekend/sunny day special. Just to be a bit different.

Cheers to Matt and everyone here on the thread

Picked up Porsche Boxster S yesterday evening with hardtop and full service history from new and very well minded with NCT just done now till 2013. Very particular owner with A4 folder of everything spent on it over the years.

Nippy car for what it is and glad I went with 3.2 as was looking at 2.7's. Fun to drive but also makes me appreciate my M5 even more!! Owner passed on design911 website for parts which I was surprised at how cheap they are.

You don't buy a mid engined car for space. Putting the engine in the middle is bad for optimizing space.

Whats the tax like on them?

Tax is 1566 each for the year. Drive Boxster for summer months and park up for winter. Split tax between both etc vice versa
