How do you switch off?

I can't ever seem to fully let go of things that bug me or worry me during the day in school, seems to play on my mind until I'm back at work! I know I'm taking things too seriously, but still can't ever seem to free my mind completly. Really don't want to become sad teacher lady who needs her bottle of wine of an evening. I know some teachers who just switch off as soon as the final bell goes, frankly, I'm jelaous as hell of em! Any tips for destressing?

Do something physical as soon as you finish. Go to the gym, take it out on the machines - feels good and you'll be grand after. At the least, go for a walk. When I started teaching we used to play squash and then swim, worked a treat.

I find having a strict work-life division helped a lot. I've a six-month lecturing contract, and I decided right at the start that some practices I'd started during my PhD wouldn't continue. This meant: no e-mails at the weekend, no prep at the weekend or no "I'll just have a quick look at this" sessions. I find it's more than paid off, and I'm much more productive from 9-5 as well.

My heavy-load days have practicals in the afternoon, so I'm usually happy to just sit down and fall asleep in front of the television afterwards.

I am the very same!! I'm hoping I'll get better at handling stress the longer I'm teaching :) I echo the physical activity suggestion. I took up jogging after Christmas and it is really helping. When I come home from school going out again is the last thing I want to do, but 3 nights a week I push myself to do it and always feel a million times better for it. I can't explain it, but it genuinely relaxes my mind!

Teacher and a part time farmer so going out to the cows is a great de-stresser. They never give me any teenage strops or atitude and are always grateful for what I do for them.:D
