........that makes you feel 'yes that was awesome'!

We all love golf and that indescribable feeling when you have a low round, win a competition or sink a 20 footer. But which shot, when executed correctly, gives you the best feeling?

Mine would be a 6 iron ~150 yards out and ball lands within 2 foot!

I pulled one of these out a couple of weeks back in stepaside on hole 6.

Use this thread to record your fav shots throughout the season.

Uphill fluffy lie on long links grass

    8 Iron 150 Yards to 4 foot.

Of course I was out of scoring range having put 2 drives in the sea, but it still was nice ;)

A perfect drive round a dogleg that just hugs the middle of the fairway and gallops for miles.

Last year the one that made me smile most was a great drive on the first hole in front of 20 or so people. All I heard was "that gentlemen, is how to hit a drive".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭ThunderCat

For me it's playing a perfectly judged bump and run on a links course and watching the ball negotiate the humps and hollows and get somewhere close to the pin.

Downside is I cant remember playing one like that for ages. :)

Of course a booming drive and an approach that covers the flag are also very nice.

This one is easy! The 25 foot double breaking putt! There is nothing like the feeling of seeing a ball break left or right at the beginning and start to head about 4 or 5 inches outside the cup, only to gently start back to the hole and fall in the front just like you thought it would!!

Played a practice in Gowran on Friday, Hit the ball fairly well all the way round... Highlight was a sweetly struck 5-iron on the 16th to 3 feet to set up a birdie...

The crisp sound from a well struck iron shot is like music to my ears (music I don't hear that often but it keeps me coming back for more!!) :D

Has to be hitting a fade with a long iron for me. Can't hit a fade to save my life. Once a year might get a fade!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭Iangolf

For me it's holing out from off the green, anytime you chip in always feels like a bonus..

Everyone loves hitting a booming drive but unfortunately you dont score untill the ball is in the hole..

    @D_Red_Army - a birdie on 16 is a rare bird...
I also played a few holes on Friday and was hitting some shots well considering how raw I am. Highlight of the evening was our twosome being called through on the 5th and hitting a 6 iron from the back tees right over the top of the flag to 8ft and then rolling in the putt. It's customary when being called through to make a complete balls of a shot but not this time :)

Hit a 4 iron onto the 3rd (180 yrds into the wind) which was pretty impressive for me but the favourite shot in general is the iron that tracks the flag and looks like it has a chance. That said, I can even find merit in a bladed 9 iron... it's all golf :D

after missing an 8 footer footer for bird when in the hunt today
followed it up by stitching a 6i to 2 feet on the next hole a par 3 and tapping in

best part was teeing off without an angry thought, and focusing........rare

3-wood approach to water-protected green on a par 5 from 230 yards or so out - slightly faded to hold with the wind and landing softly a few feet from the pin. :)

A la the golf-psychology manuals, I'm brilliant at visualising this shot (before slicing it 80 yards right into the middle of a lake).

Hit a 50 yard bunker shot today which spun across lip of the hole and finished a foot from the hole. Felt so good :) .....only for my playing partner to miss the putt :mad: (it was scotch 4somes)

Fourth hole in woodenbridge. Par 3 187 yards I think, smashed a 3 wood with some fade. Heard that wonderful sound and knew it was going close. When I got up there it was within 20 foot. Two putted for par.

Reaching a par 5 in 2 . And any shot that gives you a good look at birdie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭ssbob

Any good shot that follows a good drive, yesterday hit a booming drive on a par 5 that ran out of fairway and then proceeded to beautifully fade a 5 wood to 10 feet of the green(delighted), duffed my chip and ended up taking a bogey 6 however the first two shots were a delight.

Thought of this thread when i was standing over a 20foot par putt left to right down hill after hacking my way to the green and said to myself if i hole this I'm gonna have to post it in that thread....In it roled!!

I love when you get to a green mark your ball have one look at the putt and just think "I'm gonna hole this" and in it roles!!!!!

And there's no better feeling than making a big shot or holing a good putt in front of a crowd when playing for your club!!!

Salvaging a par does it for me. Last Sunday hit my drive into the cabbage. Was able to shunt it out and down the fairway to 125 years. Slightly downhill and a light breeze behind me. Nailed my PW to 2 feet and knocked her in...lovely.

The other thing I like is when stragegy pays off. Remember playing that beautiful par 5 on the back 9 in Westport a few years ago - you have to clear the estuary with the drive. I was having a woeful day with the driver but hitting 4 irons lovely. Hit a 4 iron off the tee, another one to the corner and a 3rd onto the green. 2 putts for a nice par. Was playing with a snotty member and it was nice to see him tap in for an 8!

Playing last Saturday, from an elevated fairway hit a 9 iron from 152 yards to a green, could see it drawing into the pin and it was a thing of beauty. It landed 3 feet from pin but ran on and ended about 15 feet from the pin and off the green, two putted for Par but it was a lovely shot, made nicer by the fact I could watch it all the way in.

I like the sound of that shot and the description.

152 with a 9? You must have been please with that LarMan.

    All time:
8 Iron, 150y out on 17th in Blarney. Along the right edge, off the fairway. Had to play a slight fade to avoid the trees.

Beautifully struck, I knew it was going close. It landed and starting rolling gently to the right, but the slope straightened it up and took it back towards the hole. I was directly behind the final line the ball took so couldn't see how close it was when it stopped.

Put the club in the bag and started walking. Looked back up and the ball had disappeared. Sweeeeeet :D

    In General
Long difficult putts and chip ins give me the most satisfaction in general play.

Had a hole in 1 on the 14th in Castlemartyr 2 years ago. I was great, but the punchy 5 iron I hit into a wind on the 3rd felt unreal (nothing like a Mizuno hit right). It was about 6 inches from the hole. Years ago we had a "Beat the Pro" on the 12th in Druids Glen. In fairness he hit an OK shot but I hit it closer - played like a donkey before and after it so I peaked in just the right time!

3 wood or hybrid to within 15 feet (2nd shot) on a par 5 does it for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭the lawman

4th hole in Highfield second shot on the Par 5 that crosses the lake and the trees.

There is a ~20 foot gap between the trees and the water. I have drilled a hybrid from right hand side of fairway through this gap a couple of times and seeing it land on the short stuff on the other side feels toasty...

i've had plenty of great shots, chip and putt over the last few yrs but generally it the clean crisp 5 wood on a par five drwing into teh green, just give me so much confidence on the eagle putt

One shot?? God it's hard to know really. Can't name one alone. It's just so great to hit any perfect shot. That's what keeps us going back. I particularly love:
    1. A sweetly hit powerful drive that draws about 5 yards, stays in the air for an age and shoots past the drives of the three guys you're playing with who thought they'd nailed theirs!!!
    2. A buttery 5 or 6 iron from 155-165m to within ten feet.
    3. A perfectly executed lob shot with a huge swing over a bunker on to a down slope from about 20 ft from the hole!!
    4. A soaring 5 wood on a par five that comes out of the middle and never leaves the flag stick.
    5. Draining a long downhill putt with a ton of break.

Great course and in super condition.

26 points off 18 which is really poor. 17 front and fell apart on back nine with only 9 points.

Best shot was a sweet 6 iron on first hole bunker which just reached front of green.

Love to have the readies to join coz it's a pretty special course.

    Enjoy Saturday.

10th hole in Grange Castle nice drive just right of the fairway. About 140 from the pin had an eight iron out. Wind was a little strong so pulled out a seven instead. Caught it on the sweet spot and I knew it was gonna be close straight away. It never left it's line and landed half a foot from the cup. Tapped it home for bird.

Getting a green in regulation, no matter what the shot, will always give me a lift. Birdie chance is what I think.

Mine was today, 160 yards, 9 iron, par 3, lands 6 feet from the hole and rolls in for my first hole in 1

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Mr. Larson

Yowzers... 160 yards? That's a good 9 iron! Well done. If I was standing beside ya I'd a told ya to go with at least one more club. What do I know eh?

Wow some going, congrats. Same as Lawman for me, full out 7 or a 6 for that distance. What kind of distance would you hit a 5 or 3 iron?

For me it was today, par 3 189 yards with pin back left, 3 iron drawing right to the hole and ball came to rest 6 inches to the right. Closest I've ever come to a hole in 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,461 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

Nice 10 foot putt that you know is going in with few inches to go, pure roll, lovely stroke, simple.....

Hard to beat a drive down fairway too to get a hole off to good start.

Hitting the fairway on the first hole. Obviously not the hardest thing to do in the world
but it settles the nerves and nice way to start your round.

In fairness, it was downhil, id normally hit my 9 bout 140 or so.

Good weekend, played v par today and finished 5 up!

I hit two beautie's the other night and I think I got more enjoyment out of these than out of any other shots I have hit, here's the scenario:

Playing the par 4 11th in Blarney golf club 404 yds, my drive went sky high and landed just short of the fairway about 250 out so decided to lay up................ have been working on a draw with my irons(normally a fader) and hit a six iron as sweet as I have ever hit a club, it was perfect, landed 65-70 yards out then proceeded to hit my sand wedge which landed 2 feet past the hole and spun back to 4ft uphill for par(have never got spin before), just the feel of the ball on those two shots gave me great pleasure..........................needless to say I missed the par putt.
