Looking for advice/tips from guys and girls here! For years I've had the same old short back and sides hairstyle. Recently I've let it grow a bit, Just wondering what type of styles do people here like? Might give me some ideas what to do with mine. Even post pics if you have one of a style. I dont even mind about length, I could have it long or short I just really dont know what to do with it!

Shaved or a mohawk for me.

Everything else is too much effort and the mohawk gets shaved off when it gets too long

I'm quite lucky with how my hair grows.

Usually have it going forward (think David Tennant for any Doctor Who fans), or brushed back for special occasions.

When I was younger I was short back and sides with a 4 on top. Then I went with 1 all over and have done for years. But recently I've been thinking about letting it grow a little to play with it a bit. Thing is, I absolutely hate my hairline - I've a cowslick at the front, when it grows it grows a rat's tail and when it comes over my ears it drives me bananas.

We'll see how long I last, I might go to short back & sides with a trim on the top instead of a shave - leave enough room to play a bit but not so much as to piss me off.

I tried growing my hair out there - bit of a mullet look - it didn't go too well, ended up looking like a rapist :(

Got a 6 blade all over after that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,838 ✭✭✭✭3hn2givr7mx1sc

4 back and sides, bout an inch left on top with fringe about 2 inches long.

I try to let my hair grow. At about 1/2 an inch per month, it would take 2 years to reach the desired length. I lose interest in growing it in about 5 months though.

So its a 2 sides and trim on top. Good stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Nemanja91

1.5 all over every month. No maintenance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Very thin at the front, haven't got it cut in about 18 months. When I do get it cut it'll be a short enough blade anyway. Generally I've bounced around from shaved to long for the last 8 years or so. Wouldn't go for a "do" ever.

Gents, I'm over in tLL and I'm just after reading through a thread about tipping hairdressers, got me curious, is that a "done thing" when getting the noggin' styled?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Nope.My barber charges a tenner, thats all they get outta me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,978 ✭✭✭✭Panthro

have to say, I've never seen it done in there either.

Fook that! I have to pay extra because apparently my hair needs to be washed before they cut it because there's more of it - even when I've washed it within the last 2 hours
    €15 indeed...

Got my hair cut a while back at the local barbers. The girl that runs it always does a great job - short back and sides and trim on top , cant go wrong.

I went in one day to find she was on holiday and a fella was filling in for her for the week.Told him what i wanted and he made an almighty mess of it.I didnt say anything and went home hoping that with a wash and bit of brylcream it might not look to bad.

    It looked worse.

I got in the car and went back down , told him that it wasnt cut properly and would he 'fix' it for me.

After 20 minutes of 'fixing' it looked as if he was using me as a guinea pig for some new hairstyles he was using, at this stage i knew he was a butcher so i went home and shaved it of.I didnt want to as i had black eye from a match earlier in the week and had to attend a christening 2 days later.

I looked like something out of Romper Stomper at the christening.

I dont know what relevance this had to the thread but i needed to get it out there, thanks.

I used to shave my head quite often but as I got older I lost my fondness for the buzz cut look. Now I pretty much just get a short back and sides and a trim on top but with a scissors, not a razor. Throw a bit of Redken Rough Paste 12 in on top and off you go.

I get a 3 or a 4 back and sides, and a trim on top. But im getting so bored with it now. But i have no idea what to do with it. When it grows it just looks like a mop, my hair is poker straight and sticks to my head.

I did let it grow down to my shoulders once, thankfully there isnt many pictures of that going around :pac:

    What's the highest blade?

Generally I'd get a 2 back and sides and three at the top although I'm thinking of getting something longer this winter, I really need it cut now. Is there a blade 5 or 6? Would all barbers have them?

Up until a year or two ago, I would have normally got a 6 on top, 5 back and sides every few weeks...so it goes that far at least.

These days I get around an inch taken off and the rest tidied up whenever it suits me.

I never get a blade. They are trained to use a scissors, you know. I get a good scissors cut, tight at the sides, enough on top to look different from a thug.

    Bit NSFW.

So is there any real men's haircut these days? Is there any way a guy can point to a catlogue and say " I want that"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,289 ✭✭✭parker kent

I very rarely let a razor near my head. I go to the same barber (a female barber too..giggidy giggidy) and she knows what I like. I usually get it cut so I can part it to the side or just have a little messy.

I tried to change things up a while ago and got a 5 on the back and sides and trimmed on top. But I think it looks too severe and a trained hairdresser/barber will do a much nicer job with a scissors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭James Forde

Usually go, 1 back and side and tight on top (doesn't make me look like a scumbag)

Letting it grow this time, looks a bit stupid really as it's VERY thick!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 983 ✭✭✭CiaranK

Let is grow long. Beyond shoulder length. That's how I've had it for years. A trim every few months to keep it tidy, I think it's cool. Sure you'll get the odd snide remark in the gents, but that's normally from jealous bald men :P

Decided to mix it up myself a while ago. Went for what the pretty lady cutting it called a "tame V". Longer on the top and back than at the sides. Not like a mohawk as it comes down just above the ears and ends with a V at the neck. Shaved in with a 2 blade and scissors on top. Blended in so it doesn't look like the scumbag or polish version!

Has had quite the positive respone !

Two and a half all over for me, none of your lady boy "v" hair cuts here ;)

    1 all over every 3 weeks. OH's a hairdresser. Haven't paid for a haircut in 2 years. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭Bbbbolger

Used to just get a 4 on back and sides and then trimmed well on top with a scissors. Recently though I've decided to grow out the top of my hair so now I get a 3 or a 4 on the back and sides, just thinned out well on the top and then blended into the sides. My hair grows very thick so the thinning out is essential...saves me having an afro!

A mate of mine is a hairdresser which is great because I can explain exactly what I want and then give out to him if he is fcuking it up. I have also been getting it cut there so many times he knows by now anyway.

Slightly longer, 'scruffy' hair suits me an awful lot more than the shorter styles. I had it shaved before and apparently it made me look like 'an escaped mental patient'.

I let it long around the ears and chopped into opn top to make it sit right. I have to get an unmerciful thinning every time i get it cut , it's like a feckin rug on top of me head.

I'm trying to grow the hair again - not very long or anything but I need to get it tidied up around the ears/sideburns and back so it doesn't look like a mullet every now and again

Hopefully it'll go better this time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 108 ✭✭DaleB91

I used to let it grow longer but about a year ago got a long V cut into it and i liked, then i let it grow and got a mullet cut into it but i shave one side with a mac3 and the other side gets a scissors cut. Get a few snide remarks but its my hair and the lads making the remarks are the fellas who have stomachs hangin out over there belt and receding hair lines and starting to go grey so i dont really care.

2 on the side/back, 5 on top. Not a huge gap between the two, and 0 maintenance. What do you call the v-cuts that don't come into a V, they stay wide? Wouldnt mind one of those blended nicely...

Thats pretty much what I have Spanner! I just told the person with the scissors I wanted exactly as you described!

    Hold onto her!

I have been going with a 1 on the sides and back, and only a slight trim on top so it is out of proportion but looks pretty cool (I think so anyway). La Liga is a great place to see cool haircuts for gents!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 174 ✭✭jeddie20

Yeah I used to have the v but then decided to get it as wide as possible at the back, sort of like a mullet? Just throw a bit of wax in it so it doesnt get fuzzy after a shower and leave it messy like it looks natural!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

8 on the sides and back, top trimmed to match everytime.

1 back on sides and tight trim on top with scissors, nice and neat and dosnt go like a fuzzy tennis ball like it used to when i got razor on top!!

This type of haircut seems to becoming more popular. The distinguished gentleman look, its hard to pull off without wearing a suit or something fancy. Dunno what you would ask the barber for prob short back and side and scissor on top cut in a way to show off the side parting (a side parting in your hair is also required, some people might now have one)

I generally go for a crew cut with a 2.5 on back and sides and a trim on top with scissors

On the tipping issue, id generally give a €2 tip
