Check hard drive diagnostics of USB drive

Bought one of those reconditioned 500GB Iomega Drives for €30.. .. would ideally like to check it for bad sectors (etc.) just so it doesn't fail down the line (probably outside of warranty). Can use ChkDsk on my Windows 7 PC upstairs, but any utility for the Mac which will do the same job? Thanks in advance.

OS X has never supported S.M.A.R.T. checks on external drives. You could use a third party utility like Tech Tool Pro to do a full surface scan, it will report if bad blocks are found.

But seems Tech Tool Pro do not offer a free downloadable anymore.

Will give a Google to see if I can find an old version hosted somewhere.
