Homemade energy bars/biscuits

    Hi All

I was down the LBS and most of the energy type foods/bars/biscuits are quite expensive for what they are.

I was thinking of making my own, maybe with oat flakes as the main ingredient with raisins, nuts, dried fruit and some golden syrup. Bake then cut up into squares. Suppose they would be something like a flapjack.

Have any of you made your own or tried a different recipe, or any alternatives ?

Must be some budding chef cyclists out there !

That Apricot bar looks to be worth a try.

If you're going to stuff them in a jersey, you'll want something that won't easily squish or fall apart, which means compromises have to be made. I reckon flapjack-type things need some butter, otherwise they tend to taste bland and lack moisture, but maybe keep the content to 1 part butter to 4 parts oats. (I'd usually do 3:4). An egg will help hold it all together too.

Dried fruit on their own are boring and, er, dry. Try baking in chopped plums with cinnamon, or raspberries (frozen ones are fine for this) with a bit of white chocolate. Apple and crushed hazelnuts are pretty nice too. Or just throw in smashed up Smarties.

I bake these quite often, I'd prefer them to traditional porridge & they're tasty!
    Odlums healthy breakfast bars

Plenty of room to experiment with the fruits in the recipe

It's been a while but I used to do something like :-

    Chop/Mash in a bowl/blender:
    Pecan/Wallnuts
    Dried Cranberries or raisins
    Dried dates

Add a spoon or two of honey to bind it all together.
Spread the mixture out on a baking tray compressing it to the desired thickness and sprinkle dessicated coconut over the lot.
Place in the fridge for a couple of hours.
Cut into bars and try not to eat them there and then! :)

muffinn posted a recipe over on the nutrition and diet forum for home-made protein bars. I'm sure though someone a bit more knowledgeable than I can using it as a base and tweek it to suit cycling needs?

I'm sure I heard somewhere that Figrolls are as good as any LBS energy bar. No idea if it's true or not:confused:

These are new - okay, so they're not homemade but they're popular, seem to work and they're cheap.

I will, at this stage declare a small vested interest, because I know the man behind them, but that shouldn't make them any less valid as an option.

This original recipe comes from Grandma's best recipes which I heartily recommend. Have added lots of nuts so maybe a bit high in fat this one but it tastes fab. and no, that's not a pint of guinness for any of the smart alecs.

    https://picasaweb.google.com/105171181803113268313/EnergyBars?authkey=Gv1sRgCLzbhpWt6-j3uQE#

Ingredients and quantities are all the 1st & 2nd pics.
    Porridge Oats, 200g
    Wheat bran, 1 tbsp
    Milled linseeds, 1tbsp
Milupa Rusk w/pear (left over baby food - no point in letting it go to waste), 1tbsp
    Rice cakes, x4
    Sunflower seeds, 1 tbsp
    Hazelnuts, blended, 1tbsp
    Walnuts, chopped, 1tbsp
    Pistachio nuts, blended, 1tbsp
    Coconuts, dessicated, 1tbsp
    Almonds, ground, 1tbsp
    Ovaltine, 1tbsp
    Honey, 2tbsp
    Manuka honey, 1tbsp
    Peanut butter, 2tbsp
    Golden olive butter, 170g
    Demarara sugar, 85g
    Plain flower, 60g

    1. Place porridge oats and anything that’s already ground/blended/chopped/minute in a bowl and give it a good stir to mix it all up.
    2. Blend anything that’s not already blended, in this case the pistachio nuts and walnuts.
    3. Break up the rice cakes into small pieces (you can blend but I think it’s best to do this by hand as you don’t want them powdery – when fluffy they give better texture to the bar).
    4. Mix the butter, honey and sugar in a saucepan and stir over low heat until melted. Add this to the dry mixture and stir well.
    5. Add to greased ovenproof dish and bake for 20-25 mins.
    6. Slice into bars and bob’s your uncle. Enjoy on your spin.
