Who votes in the Seanad Elections anyway?

I know some graduates do. My sister for example, but I'm a graduate too and don't.

Is it only graduates of some universities?

Yes, graduates of TCD and the NUI's.

I thought the voters ho have a seanad vote would be tripping over each other to re-elect Ivor Callely.

Michael Lowry should be a shining to all the corrupt politicians of Ireland.

Is it legal to have an election that only certain people can vote in? :/

Yes. Our laws set up the Seannad and the methods of electing people to it. It's the Upper House, nothing remarkable.

Yes. It mightn't be fair though.

Yes, but it's an outdated policy.

So is the policy of only certain people being allowed to run for the Seanad, which is why it needs reform.

I don't however, see the need for abolishing it though, as if it were set up & run properly, it would have important legaslitive powers.

So how do you qualify to vote in the Seanad elections ? English major ?

I didn't really mean Irish law, I didn't think Europe would allow something like that, considering how stringent they are with Human Rights stuff

You need to have a long scarf, a posh accent, a few books under your arm & attend the right college.

And a stiff upper lip is preferable, though not obligatory.

House of Lords? The Senate in France? The German Bundesrat?.... It doesn't impact Human Rights.

Have zero interest in the Seanad as its not democratic. The vast majority of Irish people do not have the entitlement to vote for it.

Only six senators are elected by the graduates.

Ivor Callely wasn't elected to the Seanad, he was appointed by the then taoiseach after failing to be elected by vote.

But don't let facts get in the way of a good cynical rant.

Well if the seanad actually had power then you may have a point.

Hey wait - isn't the seanad being abolished anyhow ???? Then why are we having an election ???

You need to be a graduate of TCD or a NUI. I have a vote myself, as I have completed my studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level in a NUI.

As someone who believes that those who have an IQ below the national average should not be allowed to vote in any election, I am a big fan of the Seanad voting system. If our TDs were elected in a similar manner, we would not have had the FF power trip for a decade plus and the likes of the lefty loons and SF would not be in the Dail.

A referendum is needed to decide if the plain people of Ireland want it abolished. So one more term at least.

So anyone who is not a graduate of TCD or NUI is a thicko and should lose the right to vote. Must be wonderful being part of an elite:rolleyes:

What about those graduates that become thick after leaving college? No checks to make sure that they satisfy the criteria to vote?

Members of the Seanad have no problem lining their pockets and going on their power trips. They're also less accountable for their actions. If you want to exclude people who have an IQ below the national average from voting you'll have to include a large number of graduates too.

6 senators from a total of 60 are voted by graduates of TCD and the NUI. Which of these 6 would you rate as being the biggest clown?

Wow. Well you are not exactly a good advertisement either for the relationship between education and IQ are you - basic reading comprehension seems to be a bit off. I mean I just said in the last guy who took my first post seriously:

Have a look its the last post before you posted yours. I mean, oh my God the irony is multiplying in this thread. My ickle sarcastic post is having sarcasm and irony babies all of its own :)

Three from Trinity, three from the NUIs, making six in total from the universities. I think you'll find that if there is a problem, they're not it. Neither are the graduates who exercised their votes...

I'm a graduate of an NUI too and there was quite a "SF Loon" and "Lefty" presence there.

I won't even be wiping my arse with my Seanad vote.
