They're actually quite good in a way, from the mid 90s after they discontinued the boxy S-coupe, the Coupe caught peoples attention, it was compared to a Ferarri in a review, people latched on to that. It wasn't anything special to drive, its based on the elantra which was Hyundais answer to the carina e.
As each model came, very little changed, the body work evolved, but mechanically there was nothing major done.
As a result, the driving experience is quite normal, handling and steering etc is similar to a family hatch, the low driving position and roofline hint at sporty ideas but ultimately its all show.

Mechanically there's very little to go wrong. The body computer can give grief, as can the sunroof. Second hand values are quite strong as It's now a niche car, 15 years ago you'd have the opel calibra, ford puma, toyota paseo, opel tigra etc, whereas now there isn't that much to directly compete with the Coupe, a long low pretty car with simple normal mechanicals.

If you like it, buy it :D

    Along with window regulators,crankshaft sensors,electrics.

This is based on the 02-on new model which having worked with them made me see what a mess Hyundai made with them. Its a nice looking car but these silly problems put me off that model.

I know one bloke whos now on his 6th body control module and his second window reg in a car with less than 80k on it.

If it was me Id buy a 00-01 1.6.

Well actually it is me--Im on the lookout for a 99-01 myself :)

Bullet proof and nothing goes wrong with them.

The window regs are down to the owners closing the doors by the glass I'd say!

The 00 model is rotten looking inside and outwhich kinda defeats the purpose. The pre facelift was so much nicer.

Really really nice looking car, really really troublesome. Depends which you value, style or substance, and I don't mean that in a smart way. I love the looks, but have friends with them who have had a lot of grief.

Ok people thanks for the opinions
But I was under the impression hyundais
Are quite reliable? Is this wrong?
Considering I'm looking at the 1.6 model
I thought it was safe enough.
Could you please elaborate on what kind of problems
    Your friends has..
Anyone any recommendations of a hyundai garage or should
    I just buy private?
    Thanks!

    I bought an '04 for the Boss - 1.6.

BCM Module sat down after 1 week - car wouldn't start. Towed away/ Module was repaired under warranty.

No issues since (about 7 months).

Wife loves it and is really happy - I'm OK with it as long as it keeps starting and driving!

Like any other car, you need to know what you're buying so look at servicing, no of owners, mileage etc etc......

But the old model was probably closed by the glass aswell and regs didnt pack up on them.

Agreed the up to 01 was a much nicer car.

I've got an 04 model. Been driving it for almost 3 years without issue. Only problem I had was the driver side window motor died.

Easy to replace and only €35 for a brand new OEM one from Korea.

Central locking actuators are another common fault, but again, cheap and easy to put right.

Make sure its been well serviced and that the timing belt has been changed.

And like most Korean cars they're prone to rust with age, especially on the rear arches and on the leading edge of the bonnet. Only seem to affect the Gen 1 model and some early Gen 2's. Gen 3/3.5 and SIII (02+) should be fine.

Have you a website where you bought that OEM part from Korea? I'm looking for a drivers side plastic cover for the door (beside mirror). I reckon someone robbed it off the car as its not something that just fell off! Thanks.

Good for you Debbie! Good Luck with it!

The independent mechanic which towed our car to the garage (once only TG) said he would have no hesitation in buying a Coupe (and frequently advises young learners to buy the Hyundais as starters). He's a VW/AUDI Specialist.

Ive actually never seen rust in either of those two places on any model coupe.

The sunroof weatherstrip used to rust on then but it was modified later on by Hyundai.

A few of them failed the NCT with rust on the rear axle but what most people dont know is that its only surface rust.I had it out with the NCT over this a while back when I was in Hyundai and they agreed to look into it.

Same here--I always recommend Accents for learner drivers.Great car and reliable as anything.

Actually most of the Hyundais are except that 2.0 petrol engine thats in the Santa Fe and Trajet and the gearbox thats in the manual Trajet.Other than that Hyundais give no problems.

My current car is a 01 Elantra 1.6 that I picked up very very cheap-Nct`d until 2013.

Still want my old model Coupe though.

Reliable as anything.Ive never seen one pack up.Used to have a 2.7 new model as company car which was auto/tiptronic and I loved it.Drove a few of the older models in auto and they were a nice drive.

Arrrghhh--Im in two minds now whether to go for an auto--Thats all your fault for mentioning it :)

I actually thought you were referring to a coupe thats been for sale for months now on some sites with the auto box gone in it when that other lad mentioned he had a 2.0 litre-The blokes been trying to sell it on gumtree or donedeal for I`d say 8/9 months now.He says its driving but I doubt its going to last if someone did buy it.

It'll be interesting to see how Hyundai and Kia evolve and differentiate them selves from one another. AFAIK, Kia is the sportier or more 'youth'-orientated brand, with Hyundai supposedly slightly more conservative. Kia have the ex-Audi designer as well - latest models are all v good-looking.

Too lazy to google but I think I saw that Kia are looking into bringing out some sort of lightweight, cheapish MX5 rival. The Coupes seem to be a mainstay of the Hyundai range.

I remember hiring a Lantra in Spain about 10 yrs ago. Hated it. The gearbox was the most agricultural I've ever experienced outside of a farmyard. Huge throws between the gears, sloppy as hell. Put me off Hyundais for a long time....

Newest coupe I drove was an 07, was a 2.0 auto, was a 4 speed, found the auto mode not very fitting for a coupe, the tiptronic mode was slow, at the time I had a 95 fto tiptronic which apart from having 60 bhp more from the same size engine, the auto box was way more advanced despite being launched in 1994. Auto mode adapts to your driving style and manual shifts are done straight away.
Can't see how you'd justify the fuel consumption and tax when there's no advantage.

    Hey.

    Just saw this thread here.

Would 90K mileage be considered to0 high for an 03 model Hyundai Coupe?

Would I get another 30-40K out of it?

I really really want this car.

    Thanks a mill. :)

Personally I would not be afraid of 90k on this car so long as it has Service History. Oil needs to be changed at regular intervals....

As OSI says.Lookout for window motors and body control modules.Other than those the coupe is reliable as anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭CluelessGirl

    Many thanks for the posts.

What is the Body Control Module?

I will check for the timing belt and the electrics.

    Thanks for that advice. :)

Electric sunroof motor is another weak point in these cars and an expensive replacement. Make sure it tilts/slides and retracts fully.

90k is about average for an 8 year old petrol car presuming it hasn't been abused or neglected.

make sure both keys start the car and that the remote locking is working.
