(names of good brands and models would be good)

What I've seen generally is about a 10% difference for left-handed guitars but it depends on a lot of things, the big killer though is the availability of models and colours. As far as versitility goes without going into metal a strat with bridge humbucker is a good way to go. Since its your first electric I'm assuming you dont want to spend too much, I'd say something like this would suit.

Edit: also this would be decent, doesn't have as good quality hardware but they're very good for the price.

force yourself to learn right handed,
I don't think which hand you use to write really comes into it when learning an instrument guitar is 80% muscle memory and maybe 20% hand/eye co-ordination
the muscles you need to be developed most are the ones on the fretting hand anyway so by being a lefty your half way there already

if you get serious about playing your going to start curse being a lefty by around the time you buy your second, maybe third guitar

get a right handed guitar and get lessons for the first few months
    honestly you'll thank me later!

I'd second punchdrunk for the most part.

However I would say that guitars are xxx-handed for a reason.
Rhythm is the most important aspect in most guitar playing styles.
To a degree you can get away with a few dud, poorly fretted notes once you've a strong rhythm going.
The inverse is certainly not true.
A right handed guitar has your right hand doing the rhythm work while your left frets notes.
As a result you may find that you have to work on your rhythms much more more than some of your right handed friends.
You'll have an advantage with your fretting hand, so there's a bit of swings and round-abouts too.

    I'm a lefty playing right-handed BTW.

yep, this man's bang on the money too,
but personally I found when I started I'd pains in my left hand from under developed muscles, and I'd crap rhythm with my right anyway,so I sucked in both regards! at least fretting notes might not be so painful for him starting out

I'm a lefty playing right hand. Your bang on. I took to the guitar and got to a good level of playing fairly quick. I guess it was down to my best hand on the fret board. I started out playing with a few mates playing songs at the kitchen table, they had been playing a good while before me. My mates are still at the same level as back then, I'm way past them at this stage. I might practice a bit more so thats part of it. I had a bit of trouble with right hand rhythm but over came it, playing the drums for years before hand helped.

Its allways a good idea to start out on acoustic first, so if this is your first guitar skip the electric for now, do the hard work on acoustic, it'll pay off when the time comes to play electric.

Yeah your writing hand/dominant hand etc shoudn't decide which way you play, but you have to do what feels natural

like i said im right handed but play guitar left handed, and would never ever change it, im lefthanded at a lot of things and right handed at a lot of things, whatever way works best for u is what i think you should do

I'm the same as Paolo_M and Hendrixfan. I play right-handed but I'm left-handed for writing, using the computer, playing pool etc. Having said that I'm not too sure about forcing yourself to play the other way around. You might be making things more difficult for yourself. What way did you hold the guitar when you picked it up first? My cousin is left-handed and when she picked up a guitar for the first time she held it left-handed without thinking about it.
Maybe there are degrees of hand domination when playing musical instruments or something?

Yea def, I can't even hold a guitar the right handed way it doesn't even sit on my lap properly or something its downright wrong i tells ya

My right hand is far better on the fretboard and feels natural enough, sometimes people just are awkward at playing
